STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Jakob Campbell and Garrett Hoffman won their bouts during the Bucknell wrestling team's dual at No. 1 Penn State on Sunday in front of a sellout crowd of over 6,500 at Rec Hall.
Campbell edged Devin Schnupp at 125 while Hoffman earned a hard-fought victory over Anthony Cassar at 197.
In the dual's first bout, Campbell quieted the raucous Rec Hall crowd by winning by a 3-1 decision. He opened the scoring with a first-period takedown; after giving up an escape to start the second period, he opened the third with an escape of his own to build his two-point edge. He ultimately held off Schnupp the rest of the way to score his first collegiate win on one of collegiate wrestling's biggest stages.

Hoffman controlled large swaths of his bout with Cassar. Entering the final frame, he held a 7-2 lead and a 2:07 edge in riding time. Cassar battled back, scoring three takedowns, but Hoffman pulled off a late escape and secured the bonus point for having a 1:38 advantage in riding time to win by an 11-8 decision.
In his first career dual start, Matthew Kolonia gave Jered Cortez a battle at 141. Entering the final frame, he trailed, 7-2; he was outscored only 3-2 the rest of the way to cede a 10-4 decision.
Penn State's lineup featured five defending national champions in Zain Retherford (149), Jason Nolf (157), Vincenzo Joseph (165), Mark Hall (174) and Bo Nickal (184). Two of those five won by fall and two took their bout by technical fall.
The Nittany Lions, who defeated the Bison by a 36-6 margin, have won six of the past seven NCAA titles. It was the first official meeting between the teams, who had previously faced off in 1944-45 before the Bucknell wrestling team competed at the varsity level.
The Bison return to action on Saturday, Nov. 18 by participating in the Navy Classic.
