J.RICHARD LEMYRE, Penn State ’54 was instrumental to the Nittany Lions’ only team champion in the first 80 Nationals. Unseeded in 1952, Lemyre’s sole loss en route to 3rd place was 11-8 in the semis to Northern Iowa champion, Gene Lybbert, one round after upsetting Oklahoma State’s #4 seed Meeker, 8-6. Unseeded again in '53, Dickie upset in the semis Oklahoma's Harold Reece, NCAA 3rd at 137 in '52. In the finals, the Lion lost 7-5 to Michigan two-time champion, Norvard Nathan.  Finally seeded 2nd as a senior, Lemyre was upset by one point in the quarters to a wrestler who lost a semi-final referee’s decision, which eliminated the Lion.

Dick’s 8-3 NCAA record included two losses to champions. He became Penn State’s third three-time EIWA champion in their 37th year in the league. His only close win among 12 at Easterns -- a 10-9 final in ’52 over Lehigh’s Ken Faust -- was voted Best Bout by the Globe-Times. Lemyre added a Gold at the 1951 Pan American Games. He and brother Joe (167) were All-Americans in ’52 and ’53.
