MALCOLM
‘MICKEY’ MacDONALD, Navy ’46,
learned to wrestle in Oklahoma high school circles under future
Hall of Fame coach, Art Griffith. Mickey was a three-time EIWA
champion at 121 from 1943-45 at the Academy, but due to WW II
policy was denied any opportunities to continue at NCAAs after
placing second nationally for Purdue in 1942. The sole loss came
against two-time champion, Merle Jennings, Michigan State.
McDonald’s three EIWA finals wins were by two wins by fall
and a 15-4 decision and he was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler
Award in 1944. He was eventually labeled by later coach Ed Peery as
“probably Navy’s greatest wrestler ever.”
Unbeaten at Navy, Mickey won the
prestigious Thompson Trophy as a senior. He later became a two-time
National AAU champion and an alternate on the U.S. Olympic Team for
the 1948 Olympics. He eventually retired in Hunt, Texas.
