JAMES "JIMMY" REED, LU
’27, Princeton coached wrestling, football
and headed the USA soccer team from 1959-61. A Lehigh ’27
graduate and EIWA 2,2,1, he was an alternate on the 1928 U.S.
Olympic Wrestling Team. In 1929, he became Princeton’s
assistant wrestling coach and head coach from 1934-63. Reed was
109-106-14 in duals, second-most wins in history. From 1938-66,
Jimmy coached Princeton soccer, with a 136-95-29 record. In 1955,
the NWCA awarded Reed its 25-Year Service Award. Reed also coached
wrestling part-time at the Hun School of Princeton. After retiring
from the university in 1969, he became full-time Hun School
wrestling and soccer coach and was inducted into its Athletic Hall
of Fame.
Reed was twice President of the EIWA. In 1942, was president of the American Wrestling Coaches Association and chairman of the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee from 1949-50. Reed spent a year chairing the NCAA Soccer Rules Committee. Between 1960-63, he was secretary-treasurer of the Intercollegiate Soccer Football Assn and president of the National Soccer Coaches Assn of America. In 1971, the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association inducted Reed into its Hall of Fame. In 1972, the NSCAA presented Reed with its Honor Award.
