      *HOWELL A. SCOBEY, JR, Lehigh ‘36 was Lehigh’s only NCAA heavyweight champion for 75 seasons between 1936-2011.  After placing second, he became Lehigh’s third champion by pinning Oklahoma State’s Gordon DuPree (NCAA 3,3,3) in 0:58. Howell placed EIWA 2,1,1 and pinned all six rivals to win two Easterns and the OW in 1936, one of three heavyweights ever to earn it. His career record was 34-7 with 28 pins in an average time of 3:40, and he owns the highest pin percentage in Lehigh history.

      Scobey was an alternate on the 1936 U.S. Olympic Team. The senior wrestling captain was also a Lehigh football captain. He started three years and was inducted into the Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame, one of seven linemen named to Lehigh’s Team of its first six decades. Born in Neptune City, NJ, he worked three decades at Bethlehem Steel, where he was General Foreman. In 1968, he moved to Naples, FL where he managed Howell and Son Sprinklers, Co.
