Wrestling Shuts Out Bloomsburg 46-0

Bearcats earn 8 bonus point wins in the regular season finale

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton wrestling team finished off their regular season with a 46-0 shutout over Bloomsburg Saturday evening in the West Gym. The win marks the largest margin of victory the Bearcats have earned over a Division 1 program.

"I'm proud of the way the guys recovered after last night," head coach Matt Dernlan said. "We had a short turnaround where we were able to show a lot of maturity. We put in good effort top to bottom with all ten guys today."

Steven Bulzomi set the tone for today's dual earning himself a pin 4:22 into his match against Willy Girard. With a forfeit at 133 against Audey Ashkar, the Bearcats took a quick 12-0 lead.

Dylan Caruana, who was recognized before the match for a senior day ceremony, dominated at 141 earning close to two minutes of ride time. His opponent, Grant Bond, avoided pin by kick-out for most of the third period. Caruana won by a 6-0 decision, increasing the lead to 15-0.

From there, Binghamton took four straight bonus point wins over the Huskies to clinch the dual.

At 149, Parker Kropman had another outstanding performance. The freshman took control early leading 9-2 through the second period. Accumulating a total of 3:05 in ride time, Kropman earned a 12-3 major decision over Nate Newberry.

Tristan Rifanburg followed suit at 157, coming out of the gate strong with an 11-2 lead after the second period. Tacking on four back points in the third period and a point for over two minutes of ride time, Rifanburg finished the match with a 16-2 major decision.

Jake Einbinder wrestled a tough match at 165, going point for point through the first period. Fighting to get a seven point lead through the second, Einbinder accumulated over 2:01 in ride time for the win. Earning a 16-4 major decision over Kevin Laubach, the redshirt freshman bumped the Bearcats lead to 27-0.

Anthony Lombardo added onto his performance from last night, earning four back points and a reversal early in the first period. The redshirt sophomore added up 2:40 in ride time for a 14-2 major decision and back to back match wins.

No. 15 Steve Schneider controlled his match from the start, racking up over three minutes in ride time through the second period. The junior took a 4-0 decision at 184 over Kyle Murphy for his 29th win of the season.

Bloomsburg forfeited again at 197, before Connor Calkins stepped on the mat and almost simultaneously pinned his opponent. Just 39 seconds into the match, the pin was the fastest in his career and his first in a dual this season.

With the win, Binghamton improves to 9-7 overall while the Huskies fall to 4-17.

The Bearcats will have a week off before they head to Bucknell March 4-5 for the EIWA Championships.

Notes: The last time Binghamton shutout a Division 1 program was in 2015 when they beat Sacred Heart 42-0.
