Dean Again Rules Vegas As Four Place, Big Red Places Fifth

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior Gabe Dean toyed with the field at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and ultimately did what he's done his whole career - make history.

Dean became the sixth wrestler and third Cornellian to capture three Las Vegas titles, dominating the 184-pound field and capping off the weekend with two easy wins over ranked opponents on Saturday as part of the blitz. He pinned his first four opponents in the first period and earned a tech fall in the finals over eighth-ranked Zach Zavatsky, who upset defending national champion and second-ranked Myles Martin in the semis.

Dean and the Big Red's three other place-winners helped the team to a fifth-place finish in the two-day meet. Fellow senior Brian Realbuto surrendered a late takedown in the finals at 174 pounds to finish as the runner-up, while senior Mark Grey used a first period takedown and a third period rideout to end with a third-place finish at 133 pounds. Sophomore Brandon Womack placed sixth overall at 165 pounds.

Two other wrestlers advanced to Saturday's morning session, but both sophomore Ben Honis (197) and freshman Noah Baughman (125) dropped consolation semifinals in the round of 12.

Dean didn't wrestle two full periods in his three matches on Friday and continued that effort with a first period fall over Central Michigan's 11th-ranked Jordan Ellingwood in the semifinals. He had six takedowns and four back points while continuously moving forward and drawing two stalling calls in the finals against Zavatsky, continuing his completely dominant senior year. He improved to 13-0 with 10 falls and three other victories by bonus points, all of those coming against wrestlers ranked in the top 13 nationally.

Realbuto controlled his match from whistle to whistle against 13th-ranked Jim Wilson of Stanford in the semifinals, eventually just missing out on a major with a 12-5 victory. He was taken down in the final 15 seconds of the finals, and though he quickly escaped, he ran out of time in a tightly-contested 3-2 loss to seventh-ranked Zahid Valencia of Arizona State. The defeat kept him at 99 career wins, just short of becoming the 25th wrestler in school history to hit the 100-win plateau.

Grey continued his comeback season with a pair of impressive victories after dropping an 8-3 contest to top-seeded Nathan Tomasello in the semis. He rebounded with a 6-2 triumph over Central Michigan's Corey Keener before topping seventh-seeded Mitch McKee of Minnesota in the third-place match, 2-0.

Womack won his first two consolation matches of the day, earning a 9-0 major over Navy's Drew Daniels and a 7-5 sudden victory decision against Ohio State's Cody Burcher. Edinboro's Austin Matthews, ranked 16h nationally, took a 7-5 sudden victory win in the consolation semifinals before losing th fifth-place match to ninth-ranked Anthony Valencia.

Baughman fell in the consolation quarterfinals to Cal-Bakersfield's Sean Nickell by a 5-0 score and Honis dropped a tightly-contested 2-0 match to 15th-ranked Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin.

Cornell's 93.5 points put it behind only Ohio Satet (118.5), Wisconsin (113.5), Virginia Tech (103) and Minnesota (97).
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Seniors Mark Grey (133), Brian Realbuto (174) and Gabe Dean (184) will lead Cornell wrestling into day two of the 2016 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The trio have all advanced to the semifinals, while three others are still alive in the consolation rounds and have a chance to finish on the podium. Also still alive are freshman Noah Baughman (125) and sophomores Brandon Womack (165) and Ben Honis (197). The Big Red enters day two in fourth place in the team standings.

Dean posted his third straight first period pin to open the tournament, this time needing just 82 seconds to earn the fall over Mark Penyacsek of Cal-Bakersfield. The win improved Dean to 11-0 on the season with nine pins as he continued to climb Cornell's career lists. His 82 bonus wins move him to fifth and his 39 falls bump him to fourth. He'll be tested in his semifinal matchup on Saturday when he faces 11th-ranked Jordan Ellingwood of Central Michigan, the fourth seed.

Realbuto continued his march to 100 career wins by improving to 98-16 overall and 6-0 this season after a tight 3-2 win over Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley in the quarters. The reigning Las Vegas Invite champion will attempt to get back to the finals when he meets No. 13 Jim Wilson of Stanford on Saturday morning.

Grey reached the semifinals after a dominant win over No. 16 Anthony Tutolo of Kent State, picking up the second period fall when he was already on the way to a bonus point win. Third-ranked Nathan Tomasello awaits in the semifinals.

Baughman, Womack and Honis all lost in the quarters and will need to win their first match on Saturday to reach the podium. Baughman and Womack each meet unseeded wrestlers, while Honis will face No. 15 Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Cornell wrestling team, behind the strength of six quarterfinalists, ended the first session on top of the team standing at the 2016 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Big Red's 34.5 points put Cornell ahead of Central Michigan (32.5), Ohio State (31) and Wisconsin (29.5).

On the strength of 11 bonus wins, including a pair of wins by fall by two-time defending national champion Gabe Dean at 184 pounds, the Big Red set itself up strong despite missing three likely starters in the lineup. Cornell hardly suffered, as freshman Noah Baughman (125) and sophomore Ben Honis (197) both reached the round of eight after upsetting the seeding charts.

Baughman used a late takedown and then another early in sudden victory to shock American's third-seed Josh Terao, while Honis knocked off a pair of seeded wrestlers in No. 20 Rocco Caywood of Army West Point and American's Jeric Kasunic, the eighth and ninth-seeded wrestlers in the 197-pound field. Up next is a giant test for Honis with top-seeded and second-ranked Brett Pfarr of Minnesota, while Baughman gets unseeded Jose Rodriguez of Ohio State for a trip to the 125-pound semifinals.

Dean was his usual dominant self, not wrestling a full period in picking up two pins. He ran through Navy's Ryan Harman in just 35 seconds in the opening round before locking up Nick Fiegener of Cal Baptist 2:13 into the first round of his second match. Dean improved to 10-0 on the year with eight wins by fall and all 10 victories coming with bonus points. His 38 career pins move him to fifth on the school's list. He is now three wins shy of becoming the sixth three-time champion in meet history.

Seniors Mark Grey (133) and Brian Realbuto (174) each won their first two matches with relative ease, though bot had anxious moments. Sophomore Brandon Womack (165) was forced to win three matches, including a pigtail, and gets a great opportunity to make a name for himself in the quarters when he faces third-seeded and ninth-ranked Anthony Valencia of Arizona State.

Also still alive in the consolation draw is sophomore Joey Galasso after going 3-1 in the morning session. Sophomore Will Koll, who upset 19th-ranked Joey Palmer of Oregon State in the first round, and senior Taylor Simaz each won first round matches before being knocked out of the back draw. Sophomore Jeramy Sweany wrestled heavyweight and didn't advance.
