BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The team trophy for the 2024 Chippewa Challenge will not be headed back to DC this year, but the American University wrestling team posted many standout performances over the three duals hosted by Cal State Bakersfield. The Eagles beat the host team 36-8 but lost 26-9 to eventual champion Campbell, and 22-12 to Central Michigan. AU posted wins over two ranked individuals and got a perfect 3-0 day out of both grad student Will Jarrell and junior Maximilian Leete.

Notable

• The biggest upset of the day belonged to Jarrell, who earned a 7-0 heavyweight victory over #8 Taye Ghadiali of Campbell. The two were scoreless after two periods, but Jarrell came alive in the third with a takedown and two penalty points on his way to the win.
• Jarrell went on to score two more shutouts, beating CSU Bakersfield's Jake Andrews 4-0, and Central Michigan's Bryan Caves 6-0.
• Leete posted a huge win over Campbell's #20 Dom Zaccone at 133 pounds, turning a 3-2 lead after two periods into an eventual 11-6 victory with two third-period takedowns.
• Against CSU Bakersfield, Leete posted one of AU's three technical fall victories with his 18-3 win over Santino Sanchez. To conclude the day, Leete edged Central Michigan's Vince Perez 6-5 thanks to a point for riding time.
• Grad student Connor Bourne, junior Jack Maida and redshirt sophomore Lucas White all finished with two wins for the day. 
• Bourne pinned the host team's Braden Smelser in 2:52, and beat CMU's Cody Brenner 8-3.
• Maida suffered his first loss of the season against Campbell, but recovered for a 1-0 victory against CSUB and a 2-1 win over CMU's Sean Spidle.
• White got an 8-2 decision over Campbell's Riley Augustine, and an impressive first-period tech fall win over CSUB's Augustine Garcia.
• Sophomore Raymond Lopez put up a strong fight against Campbell's Wynton Denkins. Lopez trailed 9-2 after the first period but only lost 13-11 after scoring six points in the third.
• After a decisive, 18-1 tech fall win for Lopez against CSUB, he had a battle once again vs. Jimmy Nugent of CMU. Lopez trailed 14-2 after two periods but prevented the bonus-point win for Nugent with three takedowns and two penalty points in the third for an 18-13 loss.
• In his first collegiate match, freshman Caleb Beaty pinned CSUB's Ryan Arrington in 1:51.
• Junior Ethan Szerencsits also posted a win against CSUB, getting riding time for a 6-5 decision against Brock Rogers.
