Drexel Defeats Binghamton in the Home Opener

PHILADELPHIAThe Dragons defeated EIWA rival Binghamton 19-12 in their home opener on Friday evening at the Drexel Recreation Gymnasium. DU earned its first conference triumph of the season. Sean O'Malley's sudden victory win over Dimitri Gamkrelidze clinched the bout for the Dragons. This is Drexel's second win in the last eight meetings against Binghamton. DU is now 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the EIWA. 

Kyle Waterman, No. 26 Luke Nichter, Tate Nichter, No. 27 Evan Barczak, Cody Walsh, and O'Malley were triumphant for the Dragons.

Antonio Mininno fought tough in the opening match but could not prevail as the Bearcats started off the dual with a win. At 133, Waterman earned two takedowns which lead to Drexel's first decision which tied the bout at three. BU won the next match at 141. Luke Nichter gave the Dragons their first lead 7-6 as he dominated in a major decision 12-4. Nichter scored six near fall points in the first two periods. Drexel earned decisions in the next three weight classes to extend its lead 16-6 going into the upper weights.

At 184, Bonino fell in a ranked matchup to Nolan in sudden victory, 3-1. In the next bout, O'Malley found himself down 4-3, at the end of the second period. After he was awarded an escape point and riding time at the end of regulation, the match was tied at four. The graduate student started off aggressive and took down Gamkrelidze in a 6-4 sudden victory. With the triumph at 197, the Dragons clinched the dual and were on top 19-9 with one weight class to go. Santino Morina battled against No. 21 Cory Day but was defeated 2-0 to close out the dual.
