Tigers Win Five Against No. 17 Rutgers, but Criteria Points to Scarlet Knights

December 11, 2022 | Wrestling

Though the Princeton wrestling team got wins from all three of its InterMat-ranked wrestlers and knocked off one of Rutgers' wrestlers from that group, the No. 17-ranked Scarlet Knights did just enough to retain the B1G-Ivy trophy in a 17-16 win on criteria Sunday afternoon in Jadwin Gym.

The teams were tied 16-16 after the 10 bouts with each winning five and none of the matches being decided by falls, forfeits, defaults or disqualifications. That sent the match to the third criteria, total points scored. Though Rutgers never led in the team score, the lead in the count of total points scored changed three times, last after a bonus-point win at 184 for Rutgers' No. 14-ranked Brian Soldano, 10-1 over Nate Dugan, that put Rutgers up 42-39 in total points. When the Scarlet Knights' William Janzer lost but kept Princeton's No. 16-ranked Luke Stout to a single point at 197 and Rutgers' No. 23-ranked Boone McDermott was a 5-3 winner over Travis Stefanik at heavyweight, it was enough to preserve Rutgers' lead in total points, 47-43.

Princeton began with the dual-match season debut of No. 2-ranked Patrick Glory, who opened with a first-period takedown and led the rest of the way in a 4-1 win over Dean Peterson at 125.

Rutgers' No. 11-ranked Joe Heilmann answered with a 9-3 win over Sean Pierson at 133, getting three takedowns over the first two periods along the way.

Then came Princeton's Danny Coles, who turned in the day's only win over an InterMat-ranked wrestler by either team, getting a first-period takedown and ultimately winning 4-3 on escapes in each of the last two periods.

Rutgers' No. 32-ranked Anthony White tied it back up at 6-6 with a 4-1 win over Rocco Camillaci at 149, getting a first-period takedown and holding Camillaci off the board until a third-period penalty point, but Princeton won back-to-back matches at 157 and 165 to open a 13-6 lead. Quincy Monday, ranked No. 1 in the nation, had what might have been a crucial bonus point, getting a major-decision win over Andrew Clark, 13-3. Monday had four takedowns in the match and added a four-point near-fall in the third to help get the bonus point, holding Clark to points on three third-period escapes.

Blaine Bergey had the win for Princeton at 165, getting an early takedown and leading the rest of the way, holding Connor O'Neill to a pair of points on escapes in the first and third periods before O'Neill managed a reversal in the third in the 8-4 final.

A strong close from Rutgers, with three wins over the final four weights, turned out to be enough to force the match to criteria and pile up the needed points in each match along the way. Princeton led in total points 33-24 after Bergey's win, but Rutgers' No. 30-ranked Jackson Turley rallied to defeat Kole Mulhauser at 174, 8-5, to begin to chip away at both Princeton's lead in the team score and in total points. Mulhauser had two first-period takedowns to lead 4-1, but Turley answered with a takedown before the first period was out and another in the second. After that match, Princeton's lead in total points stood at 38-32.

Then came Soldano's win at 184, critical for Rutgers because it answered Monday's bonus-point win and erased Princeton's lead in total points. Soldano and Dugan were scoreless after a period, but Soldano scored seven in the second period, with four coming on a near-fall after an escape and a takedown, before adding another takedown in the third on the way to the major-decision win. Soldano's win tied the match at 13-13 and put Rutgers ahead in total points, 42-39, with two bouts to go.

At 197, No. 16-ranked Luke Stout delivered Princeton three team points, with a second-period escape as the only point of the match, but Rutgers still led 42-40 in total points in an advantage that would only matter if Rutgers' No. 23-ranked Boone McDermott was able to defeat Princeton's Travis Stefanik at heavyweight.

McDermott took the lead on a first-period takedown and never trailed, getting a reversal in the second period and holding Stefanik to three points on escapes in the 5-3 win, tying the match at 16-16 and preserving Rutgers' lead in total points.

Princeton will wrestle again in a pair of tournaments, first at the Midlands Championships outside Chicago, Dec. 29-30, and then at the Franklin & Marshall Open, Jan. 6, before resuming the dual-match schedule with a visit to FloWrestling's facility in Austin, Texas, and a Jan. 13 match against Oregon State.
