WEST POINT, N.Y. — LIU wrestling coach
Joe Patrovich felt good about his team's 2022-23 prognosis after getting his first glimpse of the squad against competition on Sunday.
The Sharks held their own against multiple All-Americans while competing against Oregon State, Queens (N.C.) and host Army West Point at the Black Knight Scramble at Christl Arena.
The headliners included senior
Rhise Royster going 2-1 at 157 pounds and heavyweight
Aeden Begue splitting a pair of matches against Oregon State wrestlers, pinning Charles Hastriter and falling by a point, 3-2, to another, JJ Dixon.
Other bright spots:
Robbie Sagaris at 125 pounds holding his own against NCAA qualifier Ethan Berginc from Oregon State and
Drew Witham at 149 pounds competing against three highly accomplished Army wrestlers and winning the final one, 5-2, against Logan Brown.
Patrovich suggested he saw improvement throughout the day. He noted that Army is as many as four-deep at every weight class. The coach added that the Sharks showed marked improvement compared with last season, when LIU met the Black Knights in November at the Shorty Hitchcock Open.
"It really was a good day — even the losses, which were against really good competition," Patrovich said.
