In a Monday Reunion, Wrestlers Defeat Morgan State

January 13, 2024 | Wrestling, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

In a reunion of Mondays father and son, the Princeton wrestling team welcomed Morgan State to Jadwin Gym on Saturday as Kenny Monday, coach of a Morgan State program competing this season for the first time since 1997, coached against a Tiger team with his son Quincy Monday on the Princeton bench as an assistant coach alongside head coach Joe Dubuque after Monday's outsanding Princeton wrestling career wrapped up last winter with a third All-American honor.

The 39-3 win was Princeton's second straight dual-match victory of the season, and it came just two days after Dubuque got his first win as Princeton's head coach, coming down Route 206 at Rider.

Rookie Drew Heethuis opened the match with a tech-fall win at 125, reaching the margin early in the third period after breaking it open in the second with 12 points on three four-point near-falls. At 133, Sean Pierson followed that with another tech fall, getting his with less than a minute to go in the second period after turning in a three-point takedown and a four-point near-fall in each of the first two periods.

A win from rookie Tyler Vazquez at 141 pushed the lead to 13-0, with Vazquez getting a pair of takedowns in the first period and another in the third on the way to the victory. Eligh Rivera, at 149, Princeton's third freshman over the first four matches, had Princeton's third bonus-point win over that span, getting two of his match's four takedowns in the third period to build a lead on the way to a 14-2 win.

Rocco Camillaci closed out the first half of the match with a bonus-point win at 149, getting five takedowns in an 18-6 win over Shaymus MacIntosh.

After the intermission, Morgan State got its first win of the day when Princeton alum Jake Marsh '23, now wrestling with Morgan State, overcame an early Bergey takedown with one of his own later in the first period, adding a penalty point and an escape to it to lead 5-4 after one. Each wrestler followed with an escape, Bergey's tying it at 5-5 in the second and Marsh getting his for the eventual winning point in the third to lead 6-5.

At 174, Mikey Squires got the Tigers back on the winning side by turning in the team's fifth bonus-point win, defeating Cortilius Vann 13-3 after building a 7-0 first-period lead on a takedown and a four-point near-fall. Nate Dugan followed that at 184 with the first pin of the day, ending the match against Eric Washington Jr. in 4:01 after scoring five takedowns.

Aidan Conner had an escape to start the third period of the match at 197 and added the riding point in his 2-0 win over Nathanic Kendricks Jr., and Sebastian Garibaldi had Princeton's ninth win of the day, 19-1 over Sam Alsheimer at 285, getting three takedowns and two four-point near-falls on the way to the tech-fall win.
