Wrestling caps off 2-0 weekend, downs Navy 19-16

Day grabs nationally ranked win, Bearcats win six of ten bouts

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton wrestling won six of ten bouts, capping off a 2-0 weekend with a 19-16 victory over Navy Sunday afternoon. The match was highlighted by a win for 184-pounder Cory Day over nationally ranked David Key. Ryan Anderson added a bonus point victory.

"This was another big-time win for us," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "We're finding a way to come out on top in these close matches. That was something we struggled with earlier this season, so it's nice to see the progress we're making."

Highlights

  • BU dropped two decisions to start the match, but Anderson earned a major decision over Tyler Hunt to get BU on the board. The 141-pounder started strong, getting a takedown and four near-fall points. He added another takedown in the second period to coast to the win.

  • Nick Lombard had a crucial takedown in the first period of his matchup to vault himself to the victory. His opponent fought to stay close but a late escape and ride time point resulted in a 4-2 decision for the senior.

  • The Bearcats were pinned at 157 pounds, but rebounded at 165 pounds. Brevin Cassella, fresh off a win over No. 21 Josh Ogunsanya, had a first period takedown and then rode out Val Park for over three straight minutes. Cassella was held down in the third, but won a 4-1 decision for his second win over Park this season.

  • Jacob Nolan's matchup with Cael Crebs remained scoreless through the first period, but a critical ride out in the second gave Nolan an advantage. On top in the third again, Nolan returned Crebs to the mat numerous times en route to the 1-0 decision.

  • At 184 pounds, Cory Day improved to 11-3 on the season in style, beating 2021 EIWA runner-up David Key 6-4. The redshirt sophomore worked hard for a takedown in the first and continued his dominance on top throughout the bout. He gave up two takedowns in the third, but came out on top. Key is ranked No. 29 in the country by InterMat and had two wins at NCAA Championships a season ago.

  • 197-pounder Lou DePrez battled No. 27 Jacob Koser, and used a first period takedown to gain a lead. Koser battled on top to force overtime, but DePrez countered with a takedown to get the win and improve to 22-3 on the year.
