Bucknell Wrestling Earns Dramatic 18-17 Win over Buffalo, Handles Bloomsburg 43-3

12/17/2023 4:21:00 PM | Wrestling

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell wrestling team leveled its season record at 3-3 with a pair of dual wins – one by blowout and one by the narrowest of margins -- on Saturday at Davis Gym. The Bison began the day with an 18-17 victory over Buffalo, made possible by Dorian Crosby's technical fall in the heavyweight bout and a one-point difference in the total match points criteria, and then they came back later in the afternoon to rout Bloomsburg 43-3.

After dropping a 24-22 heartbreaker at Wisconsin in their most recent dual, the Bison will now ride a pair of good wins into the new year. Bucknell's next action comes at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga on Jan. 1-2. The Bison make their EIWA dual debut at LIU on Jan. 14 before returning home to face Morgan State on Jan. 19.

* Dual was tied 17-17, Bucknell wins on Criteria C (total match points), 64-63

Dorian Crosby's match-ending technical fall in the heavyweight bout brought Bucknell into a 17-17 tie with Buffalo, and Crosby's 18-3 verdict was just enough to give the Bison a 64-63 edge in total match points and the victory on criteria. Both teams won five bouts and there were no falls, and then the Bison prevailed by a whisker on the third tiebreaker.

Kurt Phipps, Braden Bower, Noah Mulvaney, and Myles Takats joined Crosby in the win column.

Phipps, ranked No. 24 by Intermat and No. 20 by FloWrestling this week, got Bucknell on the board at 133 pounds, leveling the dual at 3-3 with a 9-4 win over Tommy Maddox. Phipps scored a takedown 35 seconds into the bout and amassed 1:47 in riding time in the first period, but his lead was just 4-2 entering the third period. Phipps turned Maddox late in the bout for four back points to give him some separation.

Bower backed up his 5-0 win in the Wisconsin dual with a victory by nearly the same score against Buffalo's Caleb Brooks. After a scoreless first period, Bower escaped to start the second and then used a third-period reversal and riding time to finish off the shutout.

Buffalo (7-8) won the next two bouts, earning bonus points at 149, before the freshmen Mulvaney and Takats surged Bucknell back in front with consecutive wins.

No. 27/18 Mulvaney continued his outstanding rookie season with a 4-0 blanking of Hunter Stout at 165 pounds. All the scoring came in the second period, when Mulvaney quickly escaped and then earned the bout's only takedown with 27 seconds left.

Takats dominated his 174-pound bout against Jay Nivison, winning 8-1. Takats rode Nivison for the entire second period to take a 1-0 lead into the third. He went up 4-0 on two escapes and a stall point, and his takedown with 24 seconds remaining made it 7-0 with the riding time point pending. Nivison, who was hobbled by an injury suffered earlier in the period, saved the major decision by escaping with 10 seconds left.

Chase Kranitz picked up a major at 184, and Sam Mitchell followed with a 5-0 win at 197 to put the Bulls on the brink, but Crosby had other ideas. The Bison heavyweight, ranked No. 33/28 this week, secured four first-period takedowns to go up 12-3 on Robbie Unruh. Crosby couldn't quite get the pin, but his takedown with back points ended the bout at 18-3 just over a minute into the second period, and the tiebreaker criteria went in Bucknell's favor by a single point.

Bucknell avenged a 21-9 loss to Buffalo a year ago and the Bison snapped a three-match losing streak in the series. Bucknell is now 5-12 all-time against the Bulls, with the last win coming 10 years ago in 2013.

Myles Takats and Logan Deacetis secured pins, and Kurt Phipps, Braden Bower, Mikey Bartush, and Dorian Crosby all won by technical fall.
