Late Takedowns Lead #19 Wrestling to 29-3 Victory over Army

PHILADELPHIA – The 19th-ranked University of Pennsylvania wrestling team earned its first dual win of the season with a commanding 29-3 victory over the Black Knights of Army West Point on Friday night. Penn used a few late takedowns to claim victories as it grew its lead and won the first seven weight classes. #13 Anthony Artalona and #23 Nick Incontrera extended their win streaks to three with decisions over their ranked opponents on Friday evening.

The opening bout between #20 Ryan Miller and #10 Ethan Berginc set the tone for Penn's victory over Army. Miller opened the meet with a 4-3 decision. Tied 2-2 going into the final period, #10 Ethan Berginc took a 3-2 lead. As Miller timed his attack in the final 60 seconds to get a takedown that gave him the victory.

The Red and Blue built on that momentum as #12 Michael Colaiocco won by major decision over Richard Treanor (MD, 11-1) and #33 Carmen Ferrante won by a 5-1 decision over Julian Sanchez. Penn jumped out to a 14-0 lead as #10 Doug Zapf won by major decision over Matthew Williams, 12-4.

#13 Anthony Artalona kept the winning parade going with a 7-6 decision over #31 Nate Lukez. Down 6-5 and riding time not a factor, with less than 20 seconds remaining, Artalona got a takedown to give Penn a 17-0.

Revano opened the second half of the dual in dramatic fashion. Scoreless after the opening period, Revano used an escape to take a 1-0 lead in the second period. In similar fashion as Artalona, Revano got a takedown with 20 seconds remaining and earned his second dual win of the season.

Incontrera extended the Quakers lead to 23-0 with his third consecutive dual win of the season. Incontrera kept the theme of the night going as he got a late takedown for a 5-2 decision over #20 Ben Pasiuk.

Army took its first lead with a 3-2 decision at 184. #32 Maximus Hale took a 1-0 lead into the third period after Army called for a challenge on a no takedown call and after review, the call on the mat was confirmed, no takedown. Hale took a 2-1 lead after his opponent #33 Sahm Abdulrazzaq was called for holding his opponent's headgear. Hale held his ground over the final 40 seconds but Abdulrazzaq was able to get the takedown with 19 seconds remaining. After wrestling was stopped for going out of bounds, Hale was left with 12 seconds to get an escape, but was unable as Army earned its first win of the dual.

The Quakers earned their first wins of the season at 197 and 285 on Friday evening as both #31 Cole Urbas and #28 Ben Goldin picked up shutout decisions of their opponents to seal Penn's 29-3 victory.
