Wrestling Defeats Lock Haven and Has Narrow Loss Against Purdue

November 14, 2023 | Wrestling

West Point, NY – The Army West Point wrestling team had a successful match Saturday as they beat #23 Lock Haven (30-11) and saw a narrow loss to #25 Purdue (21-16). Freshman Braden Basile had a stand-out performance getting victories over not one but two ranked opponents on the day. Basile won by decision over #19 Gabe Strickland from Lock Haven. His other ranked win came against #31 Dustin Norris out of Purdue as he got the pin to secure the victory.

Army won eight out of ten bouts against Lock Haven. In addition to Basile's win, Tyler Morris (injury default), #33 Nate Lukez (decision), Dalton Harkins (decision), Gunner Filipowicz (technical fall), #25 Ben Pasiuk (major decision), Daniel Lawrence (decision) and Austin Kohlofer (pinned) all also tallied wins in their matches to help Army cruise past Lock Haven. Kohlofer also joined Basile as his win was also against a ranked opponent as he pinned #27 Isaac Reid.

The Black Knights saw four victories against #25 Purdue as Braden Basile (fall), #28 Trae McDaniel (major decision), #25 Ben Pasiuk (decision), and Lucas Stoddard (decision) came out on top. Army lost by just five points as Purdue saw the 21-16 win.

Coach's Corner:

Head Coach Kevin Ward:
"Overall, it was a solid weekend and a step forward for us as a program.  We competed with much more energy than we did our opening weekend and that was a point of emphasis in our training all week.  We narrowly missed out on beating Purdue and we responded by winning 8 of 10 matches against a very good and nationally-ranked Lock Haven team.  The energy was great up and down the lineup and our team showed the toughness you would expect from an Army team."

Hear From The Team

Freshman Braden Basile:
"Our team displayed attitude and brotherhood in BHAW this weekend. Something that our team has been working on lately is pushing through the mental battle in matches and I thought it paid off!"

Sophomore Charlie Farmer:
"I think I am steadily improving, but I'm not satisfied at all. I feel like my improvements don't come from a belief in myself but the belief in my coaches and teammates."
