Wrestling defeats Harvard, 19-13

Bearcats win four of the last five bouts to defeat Harvard.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.  - Binghamton wrestling defeated Harvard at Malkin Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. Ivan Garcia put the Bearcats on the board with a decision win at 133 pounds, and Michael Zarif cut the deficit to 7-6 with a 8-3 decision victory at 149 pounds. The Crimson led 10-6 after the first five bouts, but the Bearcats gained momentum by scoring 10 unanswered team points with three straight victories by Brevin Cassella, Sam DePrez, and Jacob Nolan, giving Binghamton a 16-10 lead going into the final two bouts. At 197, Dimitri Gamkrelidze's decision win in sudden victory sealed the dual for Bearcats.

Highlights 
  • At 133 pounds, Ivan Garcia defeated Beau Bayless by decision, 8-1. Garcia scored a first period takedown and built up 1:08 of riding time in the opening frame. Bayless escaped late in the first period to cut the deficit to 2-1. Garcia scored a quick reversal to begin the second period, which extended his lead to 4-1. In the third period, Garcia escaped instantly and  scored one more reversal late in the period to take a 7-1 lead. Garcia accumulated 3:14 of riding time in the victory.
     
  • Michael Zarif won by decision at 149 pounds over Jack Crook, 8-3. In the first period, Zarif scored first with a takedown after a scramble situation to take a 2-0 lead. Crook escaped late in the period, but Zarif scored an escape of his own to begin the second period, which increased his lead to 3-1. With a few seconds remaining in the second period, Zarif scored a key takedown to extend his lead to 5-1. Zarif scored his third takedown late in the third period to cap off a dominant performance. Zarif had 1:22 of riding time in the bout. 
     
  • Massachusetts native Brevin Cassella trailed 2-1 going into the third period at 165 pounds. Josh Kim looked to escape to begin the third period, but Cassella got both legs in and stayed tough on top for the duration of the bout. Kim was called for stalling late in the third period, which tied the match at 2-2. Cassella rode out the period and finished the bout with 1:28 of riding time, giving him the 3-2 decision win. 
     
  • Sam DePrez picked up bonus points for the Bearcats at 174 pounds with a 10-2 major decision victory. DePrez controlled the bout for the entire seven minutes. DePrez scored takedowns in the first two periods. Leading 7-2 with under 10 seconds left in the third period, DePrez scored a double-leg takedown to take a 9-2 lead. When the final buzzer went off, DePrez had racked up 2:41 of riding time, giving him the additional point to lock up the major decision. 
     
  • At 184 pounds, No. 19 Jacob Nolan scored three takedowns en route to a 7-2 decision win over Luke Rada. With the victory, Nolan improved to 11-6 on the season. Nolan is now 8-4 in duals on the season. 
     
  • At 197 pounds, Dimitri Gamkrelidze won a 3-1 decision in sudden victory to seal the dual for Binghamton. His victory put the Bearcats up nine points (19-10). Gamkrelidze had previously wrestled at 165 pounds for majority of the season. Before this afternoon's dual, Gamkrelidze had wrestled at 197 pounds just once this season.
