Bearcats win second straight dual, improve to 3-2 in EIWA duals

VESTAL, N.Y.  - Binghamton wrestling won eight of ten bouts against Hofstra on Thursday night in the West Gym. With the victory, the Bearcats won their second consecutive dual and improved to 3-2 in EIWA duals on the season.

Binghamton got a pair of decision wins to open the bout from Micah Roes (125) and Ivan Garcia (133). After a major decision victory for Hofstra at 141 pounds, the Bearcats tallied six straight victories. Michael Zarif won by major decision at 149 pounds to put the Bearcats ahead 10-4. Conner Decker held on to win a 5-4 decision at 157 pounds, which increased the team score to 13-4. Brevin Cassella recorded a technical fall in 6:40 to give Binghamton a double-digit lead. Sam DePrez improved to 10-6 on the season with a hard-fought decision victory at 174 pounds to extend the Bearcats lead to 21-4.

In the match of the evening at 184 pounds, No. 19 Jacob Nolan prevailed in overtime over No. 21 Jacob Ferreira, 4-2. Nolan's positioning in a scramble proved to be the difference in the overtime. Nolan was awarded the winning takedown, plus a standing ovation from the crowd for his victory.

Trailing 2-0 at heavyweight, No. 18 Cory Day scored a reversal to tie the bout at 2-2 in the second period. After an escape, Day scored a key takedown late in the third period to win a 5-2 decision.

"I am excited for the guys," said head coach Kyle Borshoff. "They did a great job gutting through the close matches and then finding a way to get bonus points. We have to keep it going when we wrestle Navy this Sunday."

Nine opponents on the Bearcats schedule have been or are ranked inside the top 25 this season.

"We wrestle the best teams in the country," said Borshoff. "We've competed against the best guys in the country. When we go out and wrestle and win the battles of the ranked guys in close matches, it's because we've wrestled the best programs. We built the schedule for these moments."
