Close Matches Fall the Other Way for Wrestling in a Home-Opening Loss to Michigan State

WASHINGTON - Four matches were within three or fewer points at the end, but Michigan State nonetheless handed American University wrestling a shutout loss in the Eagles' home opener on Friday night. The Spartans (3-0) got all 10 wins and won 33-0 against AU (2-2).

Notable
  • Despite the big loss on the scoreboard, only two of 10 bouts were bonus-point victories for the Spartans, and no AU wrestlers lost by fall.
  • Starting out the night at 197, redshirt junior Will Jarrell tied it up with a reversal in the third, but Ryan Vasbinder got the escape for the 3-2 win in the closest match of the night.
  • Freshman Raymond Lopez kept it close at 125 pounds, but two escapes and a takedown were enough for MSU's Tristan Lujan in a 3-0 victory.
  • At 133 pounds, sophomore Jack Maida scored the first takedown and later got a point for an MSU technical violation, but lost 8-3 to the Spartans' highest-ranked wrestler, No. 9 Rayvon Foley.
  • Freshman Caleb Campos did well to come back and score five late points in the third period, but lost 14-7 to No. 33 Caleb Fish.
  • One of the most exciting matches of the night for AU was Lucas White's at 174 pounds. He took a 2-0 lead into the second period and then went up 3-0 early in the second. Michigan State's Lucas Daly scored a late takedown in the second, and then earned a reversal in the third for a 4-3 victory.
  • Grad student Colin Shannon struck first in the final bout of the night with a first-period takedown, but lost 7-2 to No. 20 Layne Malczewski.
