Glory, Monday, Bergey Win Bouts as No. 20 Princeton Takes On No. 14 Rutgers

February 18, 2022 | Wrestling

Patrick Glory, Quincy Monday and Blaine Bergey were winners for No. 20 Princeton as the Tigers battled No. 14 Rutgers to a 24-13 defeat on Friday night in Piscataway in the renewal of the B1G-Ivy Rivalry.

Princeton opened the match with Bergey's 8-5 win over Andrew Clark at 165, opening with a takedown and ending the first period tied at 3-3 after Clark followed with a takedown of his own. Bergey's second takedown of the match helped the Tiger rookie lead 5-4 headed to the third. Bergey's third takedown of the match helped seal the win as Clark managed only a riding-time point in the final two minutes.

Rutgers took control of the match by winning the next four through heavyweight, leading 13-3 at the end of that stretch.

The run began at 174, when Connor O'Neil had the only takedown of the match in the third period in getting past Nate Dugan 3-2. At 184, No. 8 John Poznanski had a bonus-point win for Rutgers over Mikey Squires, using four first-period takedowns to lead 8-3 after one on the way to a 12-4 lead after two periods. Poznanski's fifth takedown helped secure the major decision in the 15-6 win.

At 197, in the first of the night's two battles between NCAA coaches-ranked wrestlers, Rutgers' No. 11 Greg Bulsak was a 9-3 winner over No. 20 Luke Stout at 197. An early takedown helped give Bulsak a 2-1 lead after a period, and Bulsak had the only points of the middle frame with another takedown, leading 5-1 after two. Stout looked to rally by scoring the first points of the third period with a takedown, but Bulsak closed it out with the last four points of the match, getting those a takedown between two points on escapes.

At heavyweight, Boone McDermott delivered Rutgers' fourth win of the run, getting past Matt Cover in extra time, 6-4. McDermott kept Cover off the board until the third period, using a first-period takedown and an escape in the second to lead 3-0 entering the third. Cover had a reversal and a takedown around an escape for McDermott in the third to tie it at 4-4, but a takedown in the extra period won it for McDermott and pushed Rutgers' lead to 10 points.

Princeton broke the run of Rutgers wins by taking the second of the two matchups between NCAA-ranked wrestlers, with No. 2-ranked Glory continuing his long unbeaten streak that now stands at 37 straight wins. Glory had two first-period takedowns against and a four-point near fall in the first period against No. 29 Dylan Shawver on the way to a 9-3 lead three minutes in, and while keeping Shawver scoreless the rest of the way, Glory pushed his win into bonus-point territory with a third-period takedown to help reach the 13-3 final and pull Princeton within 13-7.

Rutgers, though, stopped Princeton's comeback attempt there, getting wins at each of the next three weights to clinch the match. At 133, No. 17 Joseph Oliveri used a takedown and a four-point near-fall for six first-period points against Nick Kayal on the way to an 8-4 win. Oliveri led 7-2 after two periods, and though Kayal had a third-period takedown, Oliveri let Kayal get no closer.

No. 3 Sebastian Rivera added five points for Rutgers on a 20-3 tech-fall win at 141 against Danny Coles, leading 4-0 after a period on a takedown and a two-point near-fall before two second-period takedowns helped Rivera lead 9-1 entering the third. Rivera pulled away in the final period, getting 10 points between a pair of near-falls and a takedown.

At 149, No. 15 Michael VanBrill used two first-period takedowns to build a 4-1 lead after a period. Marshall Keller looked to rally for the Tigers, getting a takedown and exchanging reversals with VanBrill in the second period to cut VanBrill's lead to two at 7-5 entering the third, and though Keller outscored VanBrill in the third with an escape and a penalty point, a riding-time point ended up being the difference in VanBrill's 8-7 win.

The final match of the night went to the Tigers, as No. 7-ranked Monday built a quick 6-0 lead on Robert Kanniard at 157 on a takedown and a four-point near fall, but the match lasted less than a minute before Monday won by injury default.

The match was Princeton's last of the dual-match season, as the Tigers finished 6-5 and took on seven top-25 opponents, winning two of those matches against No. 6 Arizona State in Jadwin Gym on Jan. 16 and No. 23 Lehigh on Feb. 11 in Bethlehem. Princeton will head to the EIWA championships at Cornell, March 5-6.
