Wrestling splits duals with North Dakota State, Edinboro

Doyle, DePrez each defeat nationally ranked wrestlers, Lombard wins two matches

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton wrestling team competed in two duals Friday afternoon, as the Bearcats fell to North Dakota State 27-12 before prevailing in the nightcap to Edinboro, 29-12. Despite the loss to the Bison, BU had two wins over nationally ranked opponents. Against the Fighting Scots, Binghamton won seven of 10 bouts to get the victory.

"I'm proud of the way we wrestled today," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "Joe (Doyle) and Lou (DePrez) had big wins over nationally ranked opponents, and we did well against Edinboro. We still need to work on coming out on top in one-point matches, it's something we need to get better at as a whole."

Highlights

  • Lou DePrez picked up two strong wins at 197 pounds. He was tough early against Owen Pentz, recording two takedowns in the first en route to the 7-5 decision. He led 5-1 in his second bout before his opponent ultimately injury forfeited.

  • Joe Doyle made significant strides Friday, defeating No. 23 Brandon Metz by decision (8-4) before earning a major decision in his second matchup. Trailing 3-2 to Metz late in the third, Doyle was able to put Metz on his back, earning a takedown and four near-fall points to secure the win.

  • Nick Lombard went 2-0 on the day, picking up a decision against North Dakota State and a major decision against Edinboro. A late takedown against the Fighting Scots' Ryan Burgos earned him four team points, and he improved to 9-7 on the year.

  • Logan Gumble had a win in the second match, getting a 4-2 decision over PJ Gohn. It was his second dual win of the year. He fell to one of the nation's best, No. 11 Jared Franek by major decision in his first match.

  • Brevin Cassella also won his second match of the day by decision. He defeated Edinboro's Dylan Kohn 11-4. In his first matchup, he went toe-to-toe with No. 6 Luke Weber but was ultimately pinned in the final seconds despite being close to pulling off an upset.

  • Jacob Nolan split his two bouts, falling to Austin Brenner (NDSU) in a tight one before defeating Joey Arnold (Edinboro) by decision, 4-0. He dominated on top throughout.

  • Micah Roes went 1-0 on the day, defeating Ryan Henningson of North Dakota State by decision, 6-3.

  • Anthony Sobotker created some fireworks to cap off both matches. He fell by fall in his first bout, despite nearly having a pin of his own, and came back with a pin in the final bout of the day. The senior was leading 6-1 in his first matchup when he was pinned, and already had an 8-3 lead in his second match when he put on the finishing touches.
