Wrestling Defeats No. 16 Pitt to Sweep Navy Quad Meet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy wrestling team (4-0) won all three of its duals at the Navy Quad Meet on Sunday at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. The Mids claimed victories over Morgan State (39-0), VMI (40-6) and No. 16 Pitt (21-12).

"I think today was an awesome day for the team and the coaching staff. We have depth and coming out on top in three duals today showed that," said head coach Cary Kolat. We had the ability to mix up different guys in the lineup and that's when your program is truly strong. I saw a lot of great things from multiple guys today, especially in that last dual against Pitt. We were down a man with the injury to (Andrew) Cerniglia, but other guys stepped up to get the job done. That's a testament to these athletes. I know we're a good team, but it's up to us as a coaching staff moving forward to peak them at the right time. I think we're going to continue to get better as we compete more and that's very motivating."

Navy vs. Morgan State - Final Score: Navy 39, Morgan State 0
Navy began the event with a 39-0 win against Morgan State (0-3). The Mids won all 10 bouts to earn the shut-out win and claim their second win against the Bears.

Tallmadge didn't surrender any points to Julian Dawson to win by a 16-0 technical fall (5:00). Ferretti followed up with a 17-2 (5:00) technical fall victory.

With the early lead, Frank Antonelli (141) was given the opportunity to wrestle in his first dual against Khalid Brinkley. Brinkley took a 3-0 lead with a takedown in the first period. Antonelli quickly answered with an escape to cut Brinkley's advantage to 3-1 through three minutes. Antonelli scored another escape in the second to make the score, 3-2, heading into the final period. Antonelli took his first lead with a four-point near fall and was awarded another point for posting over a minute of riding time (1:22) to win the match by a 7-3 decision. His victory gave the Mids a 13-0 lead.

Navy also claimed decision wins at 149, 157 and 165 pounds to take control with a 22-0 cushion.

Nicholas Vafiadis (149) took the mat for the first collegiate dual match against Aaron Turner. The freshman jumped out to a 4-0 lead with an escape and a takedown in the second period. Turner scored his lone point of the matchup with an escape in the third. Vafiadis claimed his fifth point by finishing with 2:09 of riding time to win by a 5-1 decision.

Jonathan Ley (157) earned his first dual win as a mid with a 5-0 decision over Eric Tecson. The Miami, Fla., native attained the first point of the bout with an escape just one second into the third period. He padded his lead with a takedown and also received the riding time point (2:33).

The 165-pound matchup between Tyler Sagi and Jacob Marsh was the closest battle of the dual. Marsh scored first with a takedown, but Sagi responded with an escape and a takedown to grab a 4-3 lead after the first period. Sagi chose the down position to begin the second and was gifted a point for Marsh being penalized for interlocking his hands. Sagi built a three-point advantage with an escape and added his second takedown to build his lead to 9-3. Marsh cut his deficit to three points with a takedown with 54 seconds to go. Lucas then slammed Kendricks Jr. to the ground for a takedown and added another two points with a near fall. Kendricks Jr. scored the 10th point of the period with an escape to make the score, 6-4. Kendricks Jr. trimmed Lucas' lead down to one with an escape just before the end of the second period. Lucas controlled the last two minutes, scoring an escape and holding his riding time advantage (2:26) to claim an 8-5 decision.

Navy vs. No. 16 Pitt - Final Score: Navy 21, Pitt 12
Navy and Pitt met for the 41st time in the final dual of the quad meet. The Mids won four of the first five bouts and pulled away with a huge fall victory in the 184-pound match to beat the Panthers, 21-12. Navy improved to 26-13-2 in the all-time series and defeated Pitt for the first time since 1997.

The Mids took a 9-0 lead through three bouts thanks to three thrilling wins.

Tallmadge helped gain Navy the momentum right away with a victory in the 125-pound match against Colton Camacho. Tallmadge took a 1-0 lead with an escape in the second period. Camacho gained his first lead with a reversal to begin the scoring in the third period. Tallmadge quickly tied the match back up, 2-2, with an escape. A takedown by Tallmadge with 53 seconds to go helped him take a 5-2 lead. Camacho gained a point back with an escape to give him an opportunity to win with a takedown. Tallmadge avoided multiple shots from Camacho and took him down one more time with a second remaining to score another three points and win by an 8-3 decision.

The first matchup featuring two ranked wrestlers took place in the 133-pound bout between Ferretti and No. 10 Vinnie Santaniello. Ferretti entered the third period behind, 1-0, after Santaniello scored an escape in the second. Ferretti took his first lead with a reversal with 1:25 remaining. The officials then stopped play because Navy challenged that Santaniello had also interlocked his hands. The video review went in Navy's favor and Santaniello was charged with the penalty to gift Ferretti another point. Santaniello was only able to score an escape for the remainder of the contest and Ferretti took the match by a 3-2 decision.

Koderhandt was stuck under No. 7 Cole Matthews for most of the second period, but he broke out with 34 seconds on the clock with a reversal to take a 2-0 lead. Matthews evened the score with an escape out of the reversal and another escape early in the third period. The match looked to be heading to sudden victory, but Koderhandt made one last move to score a huge takedown with only five seconds to go. Koderhandt stayed on top of Matthews for the final seconds to win the match by a 5-2 decision.

The next two bouts went into sudden victory with each team claiming one win. No. 24 Finn Solomon (149) gave Pitt its first victory of the dual with a 4-1 decision in sudden victory over Vafiadis. Ley and Jared Keslar (157) also went into overtime tied, 1-1. Ley scored the winning takedown in sudden victory to win by a 4-1 decision and regain a nine-point lead for Navy.

No. 11 Holden Heller (165) and No. 22 Luca Augustine (174) helped the Panthers respond with back-to-back decisions at 165 (10-4 over Evans) and 174 (9-7 over Wask) to decrease their deficit to just three points with three bouts remaining.

Like in the Illinois dual, the Mids looked to Key to deliver a huge win in the 184-pound match to avoid losing their lead. Key matched up with No. 13 Reece Heller and he scored the first points of the match with a takedown in the second period. Key then immediately put Heller on his back and the official slammed his hand on the mat to signal a fall at the 2:47 mark. The fall win increased Navy's lead to 18-9 to give Crebs a chance to seal the dual in the next bout.

Crebs battled hard with No. 16 Max Stout (197), but was unable to put the dual out of reach after suffering a loss by a 4-1 decision.

The Panthers needed their heavyweight, No. 9 Dayton Pitzer, to pin Griess to tie the dual at 18-18. If Pitzer won by fall, Pitt would win the dual because it scored more points in decision, major decision and technical fall matches. Griess and Pitzer were tied, 1-1, early in the third period after each wrestler scored an escape. Griess made the move of the match and scored a takedown to take a 4-1 lead with 1:19 on the clock. Griess avoided getting pinned for the final 1:19 of the bout to beat Pitzer by a 4-2 decision.
