WASHINGTON - The second-straight home win for American University wrestling was earned in dominant fashion, as the Eagles (4-3) took down visiting Davidson (0-3) by a score of 31-7 on Saturday night in Bender Arena. American won eight of 10 bouts including four by extra points, and capped the night with a pin for
Will Jarrell at heavyweight.
Notable
- Six of American's eight wins were earned without allowing the Wildcats a single point. The 24-point margin of victory was the largest for the Eagles so far this season, and the largest at home since the 2017-18 season.
- Junior Shamil Kalmatov made the most of a rare start at 125 pounds, earning an escape, takedown and riding time for a 5-0 decision to start the Eagles off strong.
- AU got its first bonus-points win as junior Maximilian Leete scored two takedowns and got a four-point near fall on his way to a 9-0 major decision against Davidson's Hale Robinson.
- In his debut match of the season after recovering from injury, sophomore Raymond Lopez showed no rust at all in getting a huge, 17-1 technical fall at 141 pounds.
- Lopez was up 7-0 after the opening period, and then added two takedowns to a four-point near fall for a 17-1 win in 5:23.
- The Eagles had a close loss at 149 pounds, as redshirt junior Ethan Szerencsits took Tyler-Xavier McKnight to overtime but lost 11-8.
- Redshirt junior Jack Nies had a better overtime result at 157 pounds. He was tied 5-5 with Davidson's Tanner Peake after three periods and sudden victory, but his takedown in the first-period rideout made the difference, and he won 9-6.
- The third shutout win of the day came from redshirt sophomore Lucas White at 174 pounds as he beat Marc Koch 6-0 with a two-point reversal and four-point near fall.
- Graduate student Connor Bourne allowed zero points as well in his win at 184 pounds over Wyatt Ferguson. Bourne had a 3-0 lead after a first-period takedown, and finished with the 4-0 decision.
- It was shutout win number five for junior Carsten Rawls at 197 pounds as he scored five points in the third period for a 9-0 major decision, his first of the season.
- With the win already assured for American, it was the icing on the cake as graduate student Will Jarrell won by fall at heavyweight, pinning Jake Fernicola in 2:58. It was the fourth pin of the year for Jarrell, who's now just one away from cracking the top 20 list in program history.
