Three Wins by Fall Leads to 22nd-Consecutive Victory Over Bucknell for Navy Wrestling

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy wrestling team (8-5, 2-2 EIWA) won its 22nd-straight dual over Bucknell (7-5, 3-2) by a score of 34-7 on Saturday at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md.

The Mids won eight of the 10 bouts and earned 10 bonus points from three wins by fall (157, 165, 184) and a major decision (141). Additionally, Navy claimed two matches in overtime (133, 149).

The Mids improved to 26-1 against Bucknell and is now 14-0 in the series when wrestling in Annapolis.

"Tonight, we were extremely focused and had great energy on the bench. Bucknell was a great matchup and we had a lot of competitive bouts going into it. Jamier Ferere really stepped up. We had to make a switch at heavyweight and it's great when guys behind the starter can go out and get the job done. I really think that win at heavyweight got the ball rolling for us," said head coach Cary Kolat. "Brendan Ferretti knocked off a ranked guy because he stuck to his game plan, controlled the positions and never lost focus. The big difference between the Lock Haven and Bucknell dual was tonight we got after it more. Going into Army, we have to keep doing what we've been doing. The young guys in the lineup can't get caught up in the excitement. We need to wrestle like we did tonight and keep improving over the next few weeks."

The dual began with a win from No. 30 Danny Wask (174) over Myles Takats to give Navy a 3-0 lead. Wask scored his first point from an escape in the second period. He then recorded the only takedown of the match later in the period to build a 4-0 lead. Wask racked up a big chunk of riding time in the third period, but a reversal by Takats with 19 seconds to go kept him in the match. Wask answered with an escape and held Takats scoreless for the remainder of the match. Wask ended with 1:36 of riding time to earn an additional point to win by a 6-2 decision.

David Key (184) added six points to the team score with a huge win by fall (4:30) against Mikey Bartush. Key struck for a takedown in the first period, but Bartush took the lead in the second with an escape and a takedown of his own. Key escaped to tie the match and then scored a takedown four seconds later to retake the lead. Key immediately put Bartush on his back and claimed the match by fall to make the score, 9-0.

Bucknell won its first bout by major decision thanks to a big third period from Logan Deacetis. Deacetis outscored Daniel Williams (197), 8-1, in the final period to win by an 11-2 major decision.

Jamier Ferere (285) helped shift the momentum back to the Mids with an upset victory over No. 27 Dorian Crosby. Ferere trailed, 4-1, entering the third period and opted to start in the neutral position. Ferere continued to attack and eventually received a free point after Crosby was called for stalling for the second time. Ferere took his first lead with a takedown with 41 seconds to go in the match. Ferere prevented Crosby from getting back to his feet to finish with 2:15 of riding time and win by a 6-4 decision. His victory gave Navy a 12-3 lead in the dual.

The 125-pound showdown between Kade Davidheiser and Grant Treaster was the first of three overtime matches in the dual. Davidheiser claimed the bout by scoring a takedown in sudden victory to win by a 4-1 decision.

A defensive match at 133 pounds between No. 31 Brendan Ferretti and No. 14 Kurt Phipps went into TB1 tied, 1-1. Ferretti chose the down position in the first 30-second portion and took the lead by scoring a reversal with nine seconds on the clock. Phipps needed a takedown in the next 30-second section, but Ferretti kept him off the scoreboard to win by a 3-1 decision.

Navy went up, 19-7, in the dual after No. 14 Josh Koderhandt defeated Dylan Chappell by a 13-2 major decision. Koderhandt scored a takedown in the first and second periods to build his lead to 6-1. In the third, he recorded an escape and another two takedowns in the final 35 seconds to secure a bonus point.

Kaemen Smith (149) took the mat for the Mids with a chance to clinch the dual. Smith trailed, 1-0, in the second period after Riley Bower scored an escape. Bower initially thought he took a 4-0 lead after scoring a takedown, but Navy challenged that he committed an illegal head scissor prior to the takedown. The officials confirmed that there was an illegal head scissor, which not only took away Bower's takedown, but also gifted Smith a free point to tie the match at 1-1. Although Smith took a 2-1 lead with 35 seconds left, Bower had already racked up over a minute of riding time to tie the match and send it into sudden victory. Smith recorded the match-winning takedown 15 seconds into overtime to take the match by a 5-2 decision and secure the dual win for Navy.

Charlie Evans (157) was looking for a win by technical fall in his match against Aiden Davis after scoring 11 points through the first five minutes. Evans posted his third takedown with only 12 seconds to go in the match to take a 14-0 lead. He then shifted Davis on his back and pinned him with only three seconds remaining (6:57) to win by fall.

Eighteenth-ranked Andrew Cerniglia (165) quickly took care of Dylan McCullough in the final bout of the dual. After building a 14-0 advantage from two takedowns and a pair of four-point near falls, Cerniglia pinned McCullough at the 2:28 mark to win by fall.

Navy will be back in action on Feb. 16 to conclude the regular season with the Star Match against Army, which is part of the Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA. The Mids and Black Knights will take the mat against each other for the 68th time at 7:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
