Wrestling Defeats Duke and Bloomsburg, Falls to Terps at Maryland Quad Meet

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Two wins in three duals was a strong start to the season for American University wrestling, particularly after a young team earned just one dual win all of last season. The Eagles got some impressive performances out of newcomers and veterans in beating both Duke (21-15) and Bloomsburg (29-10) before falling to host Maryland (10-29) in a four-team quad meet at the XFinity Center Pavilion.

Notable
  • Freshman Raymond Lopez (125), sophomore Jack Maida (133) and graduate student Colin Shannon (184) all posted two wins apiece for American.
  • The Eagles scored a total of three pins, with two of those coming from freshmen—Lopez and Caleb Campos (165). Lopez pinned Duke's Logan Agin in 2:16, while Campos pinned Bloomsburg's Trenton Harder in 3:54.
  • In his first bout at heavyweight, junior Will Jarrell also had a pin against Bloomsburg. Jarrell scored four nearfall points in the second period against Shane Noonan before getting the win by fall in 4:16.
  • Following Lopez's pin against Duke, Madia beat Drake Doolittle 7-2 and redshirt sophomore Ethan Szerencsits (141) took down Christian Colman by 11-2 major decision with three takedowns and two late nearfall points.
  • Redshirt sophomore Jack Nies (157) scored five takedowns and got riding time on his way to a 12-3 major decision win vs. Duke's Nick Tattini that put AU in the lead by a score of 17-3.
  • The Eagles got a third major decision win vs. Duke as Shannon took down Conor Becker, 10-2.
  • Against Bloomsburg, AU won seven bouts with two pins and two major decisions.
  • Lopez started things off with his second win, getting five takedowns and beating Bronson Garber by major decision, 13-3.
  • After a one-point loss vs. Duke, redshirt senior Patrick Ryan (149) recovered for a 6-0 win vs. Bloomsburg.
  • Redshirt freshman Lucas White (174) earned his first collegiate win in his first collegiate match, scoring an early takedown and then a reversal in both the second period and the third before winning 7-3 against Bloomsburg's Matt Benedetti. The win by White was the first of four in a row to close out the dual for AU.
  • Sophomore Carsten Rawls (184) won his only dual match of the day with three takedowns, a nearfall and riding time on his way to a 10-2 major decision vs. Bloomsburg's David Tuttle.
  • Scoring one takedown in each period, redshirt junior Connor Bourne (197) shook off an earlier loss in sudden victory to finish with a 6-2 win against Bloomsburg's Anthony DeRosa, and Jarrell finished off the dual with his win by fall.
  • Maida scored the first takedown on his way to beating Maryland for a second year in a row, and ultimately earned it by 10-1 major decision over Jackson Cockrell.
  • Shannon was up 2-0 on Maryland's Kevin Makosy and won by default after an injury to Makosy.
  • Campos and Jarrell both looked strong against Maryland, posting close losses of 5-4 and 5-3, respectively.
Thoughts from Head Coach Jason Borrelli
  • "I would certainly say, compared to where we were last year - big improvements. I see it technically, I see it competitively, like our mindset and enthusiasm to compete. Just more mature and a little more seasoned as a team. We doubled our wins in the first weekend, so that's good, and something to build on. We talk a lot about trying to be the most improved team in the country, not just in wins and losses but in other areas, and to see our young guys compete right away on opening weekend at a high level was good. Raymond Lopez looked pretty darn good. He was a few positional changes away from beating a really good kid in the Maryland match, and he had a pin in his first college match as did Caleb Campos. Those things are exciting. I thought Colin Shannon looked great. I'm just really happy with where we were last year to now, but also that the guys have stayed really motivated and excited. It would have been easy to be down after the rough year we had. We're still very young so it's not surprising that we still made some young mistakes. We'll go back to the room and polish up. The good thing is that all of these guys are eager to get better, so we can correct a lot of these things. The youth on our team makes that easier. I'm excited to get back in the practice gym and then compete again next weekend."
