ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy wrestling team (3-5, 2-1) pulled off a huge come from behind victory in its final home match of the season versus Binghamton (4-10, 3-3) on Sunday at Alumni Hall. The Mids trailed 15-6 through six bouts but won three of the final four to win the dual 19-18 on senior day. Navy claimed victories early in the dual at 133 and 141-pounds and then won at 174 by fall, 197 by major decision and clinched the match with a decision at 285.
Â
Navy was put in a 6-0 hole just 38 seconds into the dual when Micah Roes pinned
Grant Treaster (125-pounds) for a fall win. Navy answered with back-to-back decision wins from
Brendan Ferretti (133-pounds) and
Josh Koderhandt (141-pounds) to even the dual at six. Ferretti held a 5-1 lead heading into the third period in his match against Ivan Garcia but an optional escape and takedown by Garcia closed the gap to 5-4. Ferretti managed to regain a two-point lead on an escape with 40 seconds to go and held Garcia scoreless for the remainder of the contest to win by a 6-4 decision. Koderhandt created separation with a takedown in the second period and scored an additional three points in the third to shutout Christian Gannone with a 7-0 decision.
Â
The Bearcats responded with three straight decision wins at 149, 157 and 165-pounds, putting Navy behind 15-6 on the scoreboard. The Mids needed a win from
Sammy Starr (174-pounds) to stay in the match and Starr came through with six points on a fall victory (4:06) over Sam DePrez to get Navy back within three points with three bouts remaining.
Â
Cael Crebs (184-pounds) took the mat for his first action since the Virginia Duals but couldn't score against 22nd-ranked Jacob Nolan, falling by a 4-0 decision to put Binghamton up 18-12.
Â
Navy took the momentum back immediately thanks to a dominant performance by team captain
Jacob Koser (197-pounds) in his final match in Annapolis. Koser contributed four points to Navy's score with a 13-1 major decision over Cayden Bevis, pulling Navy within two points and a chance to take the dual with a win in the heavyweight bout.
Â
The dual came down to the only matchup where both wrestlers were ranked between 20th-ranked
Grady Griess and 21st-ranked Cory Day. After a scoreless first period, Day chose the down position to begin the second, looking to score a point with an escape. Griess kept Day down on the mat for almost the entire two minutes, keeping the score tied heading into the final period. Griess chose the down position to begin the last two minutes and got on the board with a two-point reversal with 1:39 to go. Navy's heavyweight built a 6-0 lead with a four-point near fall with 1:03 remaining and scored an additional point for finishing with 3:20 of riding time to win by a 7-0 decision and win the dual for Navy.
Â
Griess had an impressive weekend, outscoring his two opponents 13-0 to improve to 25-4 overall and 6-1 in duals. He has allowed his opponents to score just 10 points in his last 12 matches wrestled and has claimed wins in 12 of his last 13. His victory over Day was his fourth over a nationally-ranked wrestler this season.
Â
Ferretti and Koderhandt also ended the weekend with two wins. Ferretti improves to 17-6 overall and 5-2 in duals, while Koderhandt picks up his fourth dual win of the season and 13th in his career. Koser's senior day victory gives him his 73rd all-time and 24th in a dual, while also earning his 13th career major decision win. Starr won his fourth match of the season by fall and improves to 5-4 in duals in his sophomore campaign.
Â
Navy will complete the remainder of its dual season on the road, beginning next weekend with a matchup versus Lock Haven on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Bucknell on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
