Harvard Holds Off Wrestlers' Rally in Jadwin, 20-18

January 27, 2023 | Wrestling

Though the Princeton wrestling team won a pair of matches by fall and rallied to take a late lead, Harvard won the final, decisive match of the night at heavyweight to get a 20-18 win Friday night in Jadwin Gym.

Harvard opened the day with wins in four of the first five matches to build a 14-6 lead at the halfway point. Diego Sotelo started the run at 125, using a second-period four-point near-fall on the way to a 6-0 win over Nick Kayal, and after Patrick Glory pinned Beau Bayless at 133 to put the Tigers on top 6-3, Joseph Cangro, Jack Crook and Trevor Tarsi had wins for the Crimson, with Cangro's and Tarsi's each coming with a bonus point.

Glory went ahead in his match with a first-period takedown and closed it out with a second-period pin.

At 141, Cangro built on a first-period takedown with a six-point second period, getting two on a reversal and four on a near-fall on the way to a 12-0 major-decision win over Anthony Clark as Harvard answered Glory's pin with a four-point win to go back in front 7-6. At 149, Crook edged Rocco Camillaci after the Tiger rookie reversal in the closing seconds to tie it at 3-3 but Crook used the riding-time point to get a 4-3 win. At 157, Tarsi had two takedowns in the first period on the way to a 10-2 win over Ty Whalen.

Quincy Monday, ranked No. 3 in the nation in the NCAA coaches poll, ended Harvard's run with a 5-1 win over Josh Kim at 165, getting a takedown in each of the final two periods after a scoreless first.

Monday's win brought Princeton within 14-9, but Harvard's Philip Conigliaro at 174 answered right back with an 8-4 win over Kole Mulhauser, using two first-period takedowns to build a 4-2 lead after the opening frame and lead the rest of the way.

At 184, Nate Dugan kept Princeton's hopes going with a 5-4 win over Leo Tarantino, getting the decisive point in the closing seconds on a penalty point after Tarantino picked up his second stall call of the bout. Dugan took the lead with a first-period takedown, and after Tarantino tied it with an escape in each of the first two periods, Tarantino bookended a third-period Dugan takedown with two escapes to tie it at 4-4.

Luke Stout, ranked No. 17 in the NCAA coaches poll, made it back-to-back Princeton wins and put the Tigers up 18-17 with a second-period pin in a match that saw Stout build a lead with four first-period takedowns that preceded a four-point near-fall.

That left the match in the hands of the heavyweight bout, the only one of the night that matched two wrestlers in the NCAA coaches ranking. Harvard's No. 7-ranked Yaraslau Slavikouski was scoreless through the first period and trailed 1-0 after the second once Princeton's No. 33-ranked Travis Stefanik had a point on an escape, but Slavikouski had an escape and a takedown in the third and added the riding point to get a 4-1 win and deliver the match to Harvard, 20-18.
