PHILADELPHIA – The #20 University of Pennsylvania wrestling team battled hard till the final match in The Palestra on Sunday afternoon, falling 20-16 to Stanford. 
 
Max Gallagher (125), #10 Michael Colaiocco (133), #13 CJ Composto (141), #7 Nick Incontrera (174), and #17 Maximus Hale (184) topped their opponents today to account for Penn's 16 points against Stanford.

*Gallagher won his second straight sudden victory dual today, with the other overtime victory coming from Friday's meet with Lehigh. 
 
*Incontrera and Hale moved to 5-0 in duals from wins over the Cardinal. 
 
*Composto grabbed his first dual victory of the 2023-24 season with a win against Stanford today.
 
How It Happened
Gallagher downed nationally ranked Nico Provo (#12) in the extra period to start the meet off strong for the Quakers. After being down 6-1 in the first, Gallagher prevailed in the second, getting an escape and takedown to trail by one heading into the third. Both grapplers exchanged points in the third, pushing the score to 8-8 to force sudden victory. Gallagher held strong, getting his third takedown of the match to beat #12 Provo by decision, 11-8.
 
#10 Colaiocco handled business against Stanford, winning his battle by major decision. The senior led Dom LaJoie 6-1 after the first period, with his six points coming for takedowns. Colaiocco did not slow down in the next period, adding three more points to the board to lead 9-3 heading into the final period, where he scored one final takedown to win 14-4. 
 
Composto's first dual win of the year came from a match by decision over #28 Jason Miranda (Stanford). The junior controlled the pace from the start, getting an early takedown to lead 3-1 after the first two minutes of action. #13 Composto widened the gap between himself and Miranda in the second with another takedown to be on top 6-2. Composto added one final point to the board in the last period to win the match 7-2. 
 
#7 Incontrera continued to stay hot in dual battles, taking his fifth straight win today. One takedown in the first over #21 Lorenzo Norman was enough for Incontrera to edge the Cardinal out as he held Norman scoreless while winning by decision, 4-0.
 
#17 Hale held strong against Jack Darrah, pushing his record to 5-0 from a win by decision. The junior struck early, getting a takedown in the first and second to lead 7-1 after four minutes. Hale allowed Darrah to escape one final time early in the third to win the battle 8-2.

The Quakers (1-4, 0-1 EIWA) return to The Palestra next Sunday, Jan. 28, to open Ivy League action against Columbia at 1 p.m.
