No. 19 Princeton Wins First of Weekend Pair, Tops No. 23 Lehigh

February 11, 2022 | Wrestling

Defeating Lehigh for a third straight meeting, the No. 19-ranked Princeton wrestling team was a 20-16 winner in Bethlehem on Friday night, opening up a two-match weekend that will close with the Ivy League finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Dillon Gym against Penn.

The Penn match can be seen on ESPN+ with live results on TrackWrestling. Fans should review the attendance policy before coming to the match.

The win gave Princeton its first three-match win streak over Lehigh in series history. The teams have wrestled 64 times, on and off since the series began in the 1910-11 season.

The match began at 197, and No. 20-ranked Luke Stout had takedowns in each of the first two periods on the way to a 6-3 win over JT Davis to put Princeton in front 3-0 after the first bout. Stout led 5-0 through two periods and held off a comeback attempt that saw Davis score a third-period takedown and an escape.

Matt Cover then battled No. 7-ranked Jordan Wood, who scored a 12-1 major-decision win to put Lehigh in front, 4-3. Wood had three takedowns over the first two periods in building an 8-1 lead through the first five minutes.

Princeton answered with a win by decision from No. 2 Patrick Glory at 125 against Sheldon Seymour, and though Lehigh tied the match late, the Tigers never trailed once Glory delivered the win. Glory responded to an early Seymour takedown with one of his own in the first, and though Glory and Seymour were tied at 3-3 after the first period, Glory had a takedown in each of the last two periods to build a lead and win, 9-4.

Princeton then picked up six points at 133 through an injury default by Lehigh's No. 16 Malyke Hines, who had an early takedown of Nick Kayal before suffering an apparent knee injury while attempting to turn Kayal just 1:09 into the bout. The points put Princeton up 12-4 in the match.

Lehigh then won back-to-back matches at 141 and 149 to pull within two at 12-10. Connor McGonagle was a 3-2 winner over Danny Coles at 141, getting a first-period takedown and accruing enough riding time to make that the decisive point as Coles had a pair of escapes. At 149, Max Brignola won 3-1 over Marshall Keller as a late takedown was the difference.

The teams split the final four matches of the dual. No. 7 Quincy Monday had a bonus-point win at 157 against Luca Frinzi, getting five takedowns, including two in each of the first and third periods to build a 4-1 lead and then pull away after entering the final frame up 7-1.

Down 16-10, Lehigh won at both 165 and 174 to tie the match at 16-16. No. 23 Brian Meyer won 5-3 over Jake Marsh, getting a key takedown in the first period to open the scoring and another in the third to reopen a lead after Marsh had pulled within 3-2 on an escape early in the third. At 174, Jake Logan won 7-0 over Nate Dugan, building a 5-0 lead after two periods with the help of a takedown in each frame.

That left the match up to No. 23 Travis Stefanik, from nearby Nazareth, Pa., at 184. Taking on No. 33 AJ Burkhart, Stefanik had a pair of first-period takedowns to lead 4-1 after a period. Ahead 6-2 after two, Stefanik pulled away with a pair of takedowns, the last of which preceded a four-point near fall that pushed the match into bonus territory.
