NEW YORK — Senior Angelo Rini earned a victory over Michigan's No. 7 Chris Cannon in the 133-pound weight class, highlighting the Columbia wrestling team's home opener. The No. 30-ranked Lions fell to No. 9 Michigan, 33-6.
 
With no points on the board in the first round of the match, Rini went in for a takedown on Cannon. As soon as the wrestlers hit the mat, the referees called for a stoppage due to a head injury to Cannon. The Wolverine was unable to continue and Rini was awarded the victory.
 
Rini's win gave the Lions a 6-3 lead in the match. Kai Owen, ranked No. 33 at 141 pounds, took a 1-0 lead on Sergio Lemley with an escape in his second round. However, Lemley was able to take the lead with two points on a reversal in the third round and win the match by decision, 3-1.
 
Columbia's No. 19 Richard Fedalen and Michigan's Dylan Gilcher had one of the more entertaining matches of the night. The bout went to sudden victory, 1-1, but Gilcher was awarded a takedown with eight seconds left in the round for the upset.
 
Michigan's next three wrestlers all entered the match ranked in the top-six of their respective weight classes and earned no less than a major decision. That pushed the Wolverines' lead to 22-6. A 9-5 decision by Jaden Bullock over No. 30 Aaron Ayzerov at 184 made it 25-6.
 
No. 28 Jack Wehmeyer and Jaden Bullock went down to the wire at 197 pounds. Bullock led 4-0 after an escape and a takedown in the second round. Wehmeyer got his escape in the third and quickly earned a takedown to tie things up, 4-4. However, Bullock quickly got the escape to retake the lead, 5-4, and held on through a late video review.

Columbia will host another Big Ten program on Sunday, dueling with No. 6 Ohio State at Levien Gymnasium at 11 a.m. ET.
