SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Facing five top-30 wrestlers in the Cal Poly lineup, the American University wrestling team had a tough night on the left coast and lost the first dual of a California road trip, 39-3. The lone highlight of the match for the Eagles was a win by sophomore Raymond Lopez at 141 pounds.
Notable
- Lopez trailed 3-2 against the Mustangs' Abe Hinrichsen before a late second-period takedown put him in the lead for good. He scored another in the third and went on to win by 8-5 decision.
- Junior Breon Phifer put up a strong fight at 165 pounds against Michael Goldfeder, posting two takedowns and a reversal on his way to 11 points, but ultimately fell by a score of 17-11.
- Overtime was needed at 184 pounds as graduate student Connor Bourne wrestled to a 1-1 tie through three periods against Kendall La Rosa, but it was La Rosa with the takedown in sudden victory for a 4-1 win.

- The Eagles will face three teams in the annual Chippewa Challenge on Sunday, Jan. 14, looking to defend their title from 2023 when they went 3-0. This year's host is Cal State Bakersfield, and the Eagles will also compete against Campbell and Central Michigan.
