#15 Wrestling Drops 26-11 Dual at #2 Iowa

IOWA CITY, IOWA – The 15th-ranked University of Pennsylvania wrestling team opened the dual portion of its schedule with a 26-11 loss at #2 Iowa on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers earned wins from #17 Ryan Miller, #10 Michael Colaiocco, and #32 Carmen Ferrante in three straight bouts.

Penn knew it had a tough opponent ahead in Iowa as the Hawkeyes opened with five straight victories at 165, 174, 184, 197, and 285. #24 Lucas Revano opened the meet with a trio of escapes through the first two periods to cut the deficit in half as Patrick Kennedy recorded a trio of takedowns in that time frame.  Cole Urbas went down 8-1 after the first period but used an 8-0 second period to take a one-point lead heading into the third period. An early takedown by his opponent, #2 Jacob Warner, gave Warner a lead he would not relinquish, even as Urbas got a late point for an escape. Warner got the 11-10 decision as Iowa jumped out to a 13-0 lead.

After a short halftime, Penn rallied off three straight wins at 125, 133, and 141 to cut the Iowa lead to just six points. #17 Ryan Miller opened the second half with a tech fall (20-5, 7:00) as earned 14 of his 20 points via a takedown. Colaiocco and Ferrante had identical first and second period scorings as they both earned a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second to lead 3-0. Colaiocco earned another takedown in the third period and a point for riding time to win his bout 6-0. Despite a third period escape by his opponent, Ferrante won his bout 4-1. Ferrante's victory cut down Iowa's lead to just six points, 17-11. At 149, Doug Zapf's opponent #6 Max Murin opened the scoring with a first period takedown, but Zapf was able to earn a point for an escape to trail 2-1 after the first period. Zapf tied the bout 2-2 early with an escape in the second period and took a lead with a take down and lead 4-3 after the second period. Murin's escape in the third period tied it up at 4-4 and sent it to overtime, where he got a takedown to win the bout, which practically sealed the victory for the home team. In the final bout of the meet, #10 Anthony Artalona jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a takedown and then lead 2-1 after the first period. Artalona quickly extended his lead with an escape and a takedown but would eventually get pinned to give Iowa's Cobe Siebrecht his fourth win of the season.
