WASHINGTON - There were three strong individual victories, but it wasn't enough for American University wrestling in a home dual against Utah Valley as the Eagles lost, 25-12. American now stands at 2-3 for the season and will be back at home on Tuesday night, Nov. 21 against George Mason for the Turkey Tussle.
Notable
- In the fourth match of the night at heavyweight, #31 Will Jarrell got the Eagles' first takedown of the dual and took a 3-1 lead into the second period.
- At 4:08, Jarrell got a quick pin to put AU on the board with six points, cutting the deficit in half after the Eagles had trailed 12-0.
- It was the third pin of the season for Jarrell, who improved to 6-3 overall.
- Coming into the night 7-0 at 125 pounds, #14 Jack Maida kept the streak alive with a 7-1 decision against Yusief Lillie to move to 8-0 overall.
- It was 1-0 Maida heading into the third period before he scored two takedowns including one right the end for the final tally of 7-1.
- Both Maximilian Leete (133) and Gage Owen (149) suffered tough, two-point losses to the Wolverines, and the Eagles fell too far behind with three straight losses.
- In the second-to-last bout, redshirt junior Jack Nies (157) made his season debut after missing the first few weeks due to injury.
- Nies and Utah Valley's Kyler Lake were tied 1-1 early in the third period before the pace picked up significantly.
- The first takedown came from Nies who went up 4-1, but an escape and subsequent takedown from Lake put Nies down 5-4.
- Finally, with just seconds remaining, Nies scored a reversal for a 6-5 decision.
