Win Over Oregon State Highlights Opening Night Split For Mountain Hawks

CORVALLIS, Ore. – No. 24 Lehigh opened its season by splitting a pair of duals Saturday night at Gill Coliseum. The Mountain Hawks bounced back from a 22-11 loss to Campbell to take six bouts in a 21-12 victory over host Oregon State in the nightcap. Junior Josh Humphreys' return to the mat was successful as Humphreys posted a pair of bonus wins, including a key first period pin against the Beavers. Senior Jordan Wood also posted two victories Saturday evening.

In its second dual of the day, Lehigh broke a 12-12 tie by claiming the final three bouts. Sophomore AJ Burkhart picked up his first win up at 184, scoring four takedowns in a 10-4 decision over Mason Reinche that gave Lehigh a lead it would not relinquish. Freshman JT Davis followed with a 6-1 win over JJ Dixon at 197 and Wood closed out the evening by rallying from a 3-2 deficit late with a takedown to defeat Gary Traub 4-3.

Junior Jaret Lane opened the Oregon State dual against Brandon Kaylor at 125 and found himself behind 5-3 late in the third period when he used a cradle for the tying takedown and added four near fall points to win 9-5.

Oregon State (1-1) responded with three straight decisions to take a 9-3 lead. Jason Shaner rode a fast start to hold off freshman Malyke Hines 10-8 at 133, a second period reversal was the difference in Grant Willits' 3-0 decision over junior Dan Moran at 141 and Cory Crooks won 9-4 over Manzona Bryant IV at 149.

Humphreys pulled Lehigh even at the midway point, scoring a first period takedown against 15th-ranked Hunter Willits at 157 before securing the fall at the 2:08 mark.

Sophomore Brian Meyer put Lehigh back in front with a solid 4-2 decision over Matthew Olguin at 165 but a victory by the Beavers at 174 tied the dual at 12-12 before the Mountain Hawks claimed the final three bouts.

In its first dual of the day, Lehigh came up on the short end of all five bouts that were decided by one or two points. Hines posted an 8-4 decision over Domenick Zaccone at 133 and Humphreys and Wood added wins by major decision, but the Fighting Camels posted 3-2 decisions at 125, 149 and 174 and picked up overtime wins at 165 and 184. Freshman Sheldon Seymour wrestled 125 against Campbell and junior Jimmy Hoffman wrestled 149 against the Fighting Camels.

The Mountain Hawks will next compete at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Sunday, Nov. 14 at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pa.
