Bucknell's Hartman, Delp Defeat Nationally Ranked Cowboys

The Bison fall to No. 12 Oklahoma State, 32-6, in their dual finale

STILLWATER, Okla. – Nick Delp and Zach Hartman defeated top-20 opponents during the Bucknell wrestling team's dual final against No. 12 Oklahoma State on Friday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

At 157 pounds, Delp knocked off No. 18 Wyatt Sheets by a 7-5 decision. Hartman, Intermat's 18th-ranked 165 pounder, blanked No. 8 Travis Wittlake by a 5-0 margin.

Delp's victory over Sheets, a two-time NCAA qualifier and 2021 All-American, was hard fought. The sophomore scored their bout's opening takedown, which was also Bucknell's first of the dual, with just over a minute remaining in the opening frame; he added an escape off of a restart to take a 3-0 lead into the middle stanza. At the end of the second period, he held a 5-2 edge, bolstered by registering another takedown and ceding only two escapes.

With Sheets attempting a third-period rally, Delp pulled off a reversal with just under a minute left to flip a tight 5-4 lead into a more comfortable 7-4 advantage. After Sheets escaped, Delp held off a late shot to secure his second career victory over a nationally ranked foe and his first over one in the top 20.

In one of the night's two bouts between nationally ranked opponents, Hartman held Wittlake, his highest-ranked foe of the campaign, without a point. It was Hartman's 17th career victory over a nationally ranked grappler and brought his 2021-22 dual record to a sterling 15-1.

Like Hartman, Wittlake is a two-time All-American; he also won the 2020 Big 12 title and has been ranked as high as second by Intermat during his career. Sheets, the No. 33 seed in the 2021 NCAA Championships, ultimately finished eighth, becoming the lowest seed to capture All-America laurels.

The Cowboys (12-4, 5-3 Big 12), who sent nine ranked grapplers to the mat, ultimately powered past the Bison (12-6, 7-3 EIWA) by winning the other eight bouts. They also scored bonus points in four of their victories, highlighted by a pin and two technical falls.

In the night's other bout between nationally ranked opponents, which came at 141 pounds, No. 21 Carter Young topped No. 26 Darren Miller by an 8-3 decision. Brandon Seidman (125) gave No. 7 Trevor Mastrogiovanni a battle but ceded a 2-0 decision while Mason McCready (197) was edged by Gavin Stika by a tight 3-2 margin.

Friday's dual was a homecoming for Kolby DePron, a Blanchard native who dropped a 9-3 decision to fellow Oklahoma product Kaden Gfeller. At Bridge Creek High School, DePron was a three-time state champion (2019, 2020 & 2021) and the 2018 state runner-up.

The Bison, who closed dual action with their loss at Oklahoma State, next compete at the 2022 EIWA Championships from Saturday, March 5 to Sunday, March 6 at Cornell's Newman Arena at Bartels Hall.
