Mids Drop Both Contests On First Day Of Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. - The Navy wrestling team (0-3) fell in both matchups on the first day of the 42nd annual Virginia Duals on Friday. The Mids lost their opening dual to 19th-ranked South Dakota State (4-2, 1-0) 31-6 and then suffered a 29-9 defeat later in the day to Virginia (4-1). The losses are Navy's first against both programs in its history.

Dual 1: South Dakota State 31, Navy 6
The Mids opened the Virginia Duals with its first matchup against the Jackrabbits since 1970. Navy fell behind 4-0 after a 12-0 major decision win by 28th-ranked Tanner Jordan over Dayton DelViscio in the 125-pound bout but Brendan Ferretti (133-pounds) had a big response for Navy. The freshman defeated Tanner Jordan by a 4-3 decision for his first career dual victory to get Navy on the board, trailing 4-3.

The most anticipated matchup followed between Navy's 14th-ranked Josh Koderhandt (141-pounds) and ninth-ranked Clay Carlson. The two met previously twice at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational back in December, where each wrestler claimed a win. Carlson managed to edge Koderhandt in Hampton by an 11-6 decision, putting the Jackrabbits up 7-3.

SDSU went ahead by double digits with wins at 149 and 157 pounds and Navy needed a victory from veteran Val Park against 18th-ranked Tanner Cook, who came into the match tied for third in the nation in fall victories. Cook added to his fall win total, pinning park in 29 seconds for his eighth of the season to give South Dakota State another six points and a 20-3 advantage.

The Jackrabbits added another 11 points with wins at 174, 184 and 197 pounds before Grady Griess (285-pounds) managed to end the dual on a good note for the Mids, defeating Bowen McConville by a 5-1 decision for his third career dual victory and 40th win overall.
