Wrestling Falls to Campbell in Season Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Army West Point wrestling team fell to the Campbell University Fighting Camels 25-9 at the Battle of Liberty at Fort Liberty. Army saw success with Ethan Berginc, Dalton Harkins, and Trae McDaniel recorded wins for the Black Knights. 

Match Recap 
At 157, senior Nate Lukez kicked things off for Army competing against Campbell's Chris Earnest. In the first period, Lukez got on the board first with a takedown taking a 3-0 lead.



Earnest made it a 3-2 match with an escape. Lukez extended his lead with a takedown, making it a 6-1 match. Earnest earned another escape, making it a 6-2 match. After a takedown in the third period, Earnest made it a one-point match. With riding time, Earnest forced overtime. Earnest defeated Lukez in Sudden Victory by a 9-6 decision. 

#33 (in the country) Dalton Harkins faced off against Campbell's Dom Baker at 165-class. After a scoreless first period, Harkins got on the board with an escape, taking a 1-0 lead. Baker tied the match up in the third period at 1-1 with an escape. Harkins had a takedown in Sudden Victory, defeating Baker with a 4-1 decision. 



At 174 freshman Gunner Filipowicz fell to Campbell's #30 (in the country) Austin Murphy by a 4-2 decision.  In the 184 weight-class, Senior #13 Ben Pasiuk was defeated by #20 Caleb Hopkins by an 8-0 major decision. Daniel Lawrence was bested by #27 Levi Hopkins by a decision (6-0). 

At 125, #26 (in the country) Ethan Berginc competed opposite Zander Phaturos. In the first period, Berginc struck first, taking a 1-0 lead after a technical violation by Phaturos. Berginc took a 2-0 lead with an escape in the second period. Berginc dominated the mat in the third period, securing four points with a near fall, taking a 6-0 lead.
 



Phaturos got on the board with an escape, making a 6-1 match. Ethan Berginc defeated Phaturos by a 6-1 decision. In his collegiate debut, Braden Basile faced off against #12 Domenic Zaccone in the 133 weight class. Zaccone defeated Basile by a 12-10 decision. At 141, junior Zach Keal competed opposite Campbell's Chris Rivera. Rivera bested Keal by a decision (4-1). 

At 149 #30 Trae McDaniel competed against Campbell's Justin Rivera. McDaniel got on the board first with a takedown in the first period, taking a 3-0 lead. McDaniel extended his lead in the second period with an escape, making it a 4-0 match.  

McDaniel continued to command the mat, securing a takedown, and taking a 7-0 lead. Trae McDaniel defeated Rivera by a 7-0 decision.
