Hofstra Rallies Past Franklin And Marshall In EIWA Opener

Lancaster, PA - Keaton Kluever, ranked 22nd at 285 pounds, scored a tech fall victory to put the Pride back on top and a forfeit win sealed the deal as Hofstra opened Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association action with a 21-16 victory over Franklin and Marshall Sunday. The teams split the 10 matches as Hofstra (6-3, 1-0 EIWA) won its third consecutive dual match. 

After losing a 5-2 decision at 141 pounds to open the match, the Pride ran off three consecutive victories to take a 10-3 lead. Noah Tapia continued his winning ways with a 14-5 major decision over Josh Hillard at 149 pounds. Jurius Clark followed with a 7-4 win over Dominic Wheatley at 157, snapping a 4-4 tie with a third period takedown. Jake Slotnick closed the run with a 5-2 decision over Josh Palmucci at 165. 

The Diplomats (3-2, 0-1 EIWA) made it a 10-6 match at 174 pounds as Noah Fox took a 5-4 decision over Ross McFarland. 18th-ranked James Conway followed with an 8-1 win over the Pride's Will Conlon at 184 pounds to bring the Diplomats within one, 10-9. John Crawford, ranked 31st at 197 pounds, put Franklin and Marshall back on top, 12-10, with a 7-2 decision over Nikolas Miller

Kluever, however, dominated Harrison Shapiro in their 285-pound match and his 16-1 tech fall put the Pride up, 15-12. The Diplomats then had to forfeit at 125 pounds, which sealed the Hofstra victory. No. 28 Mason Leiphart closed the match with a major decision win over the Pride's Dylan Ryder to account for the final score.

Hofstra returns to action Saturday when it hosts LIU in an EIWA match at 1 p.m. in the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Notes:
-The three-match win streak is Hofstra's second of the season.
-Tapia has won eight matches in a row.
-Kluever picked up his second tech fall of the season.
-Tapia has won five matches by major decision. 
-Hofstra is 12-5 all-time against Franklin and Marshall.
-The win gave Hofstra Coach Dennis Papadatos his 60th career dual match victory.
