IOWA CITY, Iowa – Aaron Ayzerov registered Columbia's lone bout win as the Lions fell to No. 4 Iowa, 38-3 in the dual match Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Columbia falls to 0-3 in dual matches this season with all three coming against Big Ten opponents ranked inside the Top 10.
No. 22 Ayzerov scored a takedown two minutes into the first period of the 184 bout against Aiden Riggins. The two battled through a scoreless second period before Ayzerov scored the next point in the third period with an escape to take a 4-0 advantage. Riggins tried to rally back late in the third period, but Ayzerov fended him off to secure a 5-2 decision victory to put the first points of the match on the board for Columbia.
Ayzerov's win ended up being the only one of the match for the Lions as No. 33
Jack Wehmeyer (184) and
Billy McChesney (HWT) were defeated in the final two bouts of the night. No. 11
Angelo Rini battled in a close bout at 133, but he ultimately lost in sudden victory.
Jaden Le also had a tough test against Iowa's No. 2 Jared Franek. Le fought hard early before Franek pulled away later in the bout.
Rini got the 133 bout started with a takedown as he led Iowa's Cullan Schriever AZafter the first period. Schriever answered with a takedown late in the second period to tie the score. Rini scored on an escape and held the riding time advantage heading into the third period. Rini struck with another escape point in the third to hold a 5-3 advantage going down the stretch. Schriever was able to get a takedown with 31 seconds remaining in the period to force sudden victory. Schriever used another takedown to win the bout in sudden victory.
Le battled against Iowa's No. 2 Jared Franek in the 157 bout. Franek took the lead early with a takedown about 20 seconds into the bout. Le rebounded with an escape point and a takedown later on to take the lead before Franek then scored an escape point to finish the first period tied, 4-4. Franek pulled away in the second period with another takedown and he held on take a 9-5 decision over Le.
