No. 22 Princeton Tops No. 6 Arizona State on Strong Start, Late Rally
January 16, 2022 | Wrestling
The win was the third over a top-10 team in the team's last three competitive seasons. Both of the other two were against Lehigh, against the seventh-ranked Mountain Hawks in November 2019 and a year earlier when Lehigh was ranked No. 8.
In a national top-four battle No. 2 Patrick Glory was a 12-6 winner over No. 4 Brandon Courtney, giving Princeton a 3-0 lead to start. The win kept Glory perfect on the season at 5-0 and extended his win streak to 29 straight matches.
Glory had a takedown (below) and a two-point near fall to take a 4-1 lead into the second period before opening that lead with a four-point near fall and a takedown in the middle frame to lead 10-2 entering the final two minutes.

Arizona State won four of the next five matches, but the one in that stretch that went to the Tigers turned out to be a big one, as Danny Coles scored late to get an 8-7 decision over Cleveland Belton.
Coles fell behind 4-0 on a takedown and a near fall before pulling to within 4-3 by the end of the first period thanks to an escape and a takedown. Coles then went up in the second period on a reverse before a Belton escape evened it at 5-5 entering the third.
A Belton takedown gave the ASU wrestler a 7-5 lead, but after an escape pulled Coles within one, the Tiger rookie had the go-ahead takedown to help secure three points for Princeton that proved to be essential in winning the overall match.

The stretch that saw ASU win four of five matches included a tech-fall win for No. 4 Michael McGee at 133, a 5-1 decision for No. 11 Kyle Parco over Marshall Keller at 149, a national top-15 battle at 157 between No. 3 Jacori Teemer for the Sun Devils and Princeton's No. 11 Quincy Monday, and a 6-3 decision for ASU's No. 6 Anthony Valencia over Jake Marsh at 165.
The match at 157 saw Monday score the first points of the bout on a second-period reversal, but Teemer then held Monday scoreless until a third-period escape that pulled Monday within 4-3 before Teemer held on for the win.
After the bout at 165, Arizona State led 14-6, but the tide soon turned in Princeton's favor.
At 174, Nate Dugan was an 8-4 winner over Zane Coleman, bringing Princeton within five at 14-9. Dugan had a pair of first-period takedowns (one included below), to lead 4-1 after the first three minutes and never relinquish that lead.

The forfeit win to Princeton's No. 22 Travis Stefanik at 184 was pivotal, giving Princeton its first lead, at 15-14, since Coles' win put Princeton ahead 6-5 three bouts in.
It was up to Princeton's No. 16 Luke Stout, at 197, to build on that lead, and the Tiger freshman did, getting two takedowns and a four-point near-fall in the first period to go up 8-1 after the first three minutes on the way to a 19-3 tech-fall win that ended just before the second period came to a close.

Stout's win, the first non-forfeit win of the day for Princeton that brought bonus points with it, increased Princeton's lead to 20-14 heading into the final bout of the day
Matt Cover had the task of taking on ASU's No. 3 Cohlton Schultz at heavyweight, and though Schultz did just enough to get a bonus-point win at 13-5, it wasn't enough to keep Princeton from taking the match and its third top-10 win in as many seasons of competition.
