Navy Gets Back Into Win Column With 21-12 Victory Over Hofstra

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy wrestling team (2-5, 1-1) took control early in its match versus Hofstra (2-4, 1-4) on Saturday at Dahlgren Hall to win the dual by a final score of 21-12. The Mids claimed victories at 125, 133, 141, 149 and 165 pounds to build an 18-3 lead, before claiming the heavyweight bout to clinch their second victory of the season and first versus an EIWA opponent.

Dayton DelViscio (125-pounds) gave Navy a huge victory in the dual's first bout, defeating Jacob Moon by fall (4:19) to give Navy a 6-0 lead. DelViscio was trailing 3-0 in the second period after Moon scored a takedown but he quickly turned Moon around and won his fifth career match by fall. The 133-pound match between 31st-ranked Brendan Ferretti and Chase Liardi came down to the wire. Ferretti managed to score the only point of the match with an escape with 22 seconds remaining to win by a 1-0 decision and put Navy up 9-0.

Josh Koderhandt (141-pounds) went into the final period trailing 6-3 in his battle against Justin Hoyle but managed to force sudden victory after scoring an escape ten seconds into the period and then a takedown with 22 seconds left in regulation. Koderhandt got Hoyle in a tough position and made his move to score four points with a takedown and two-point near fall to win the match by a 10-6 decision, increasing Navy's lead to 12-0.

Kaemen Smith (149-pounds) won the Mids their fourth straight bout with his first career dual victory over Michael Leandrou. Smith fell behind 4-1 in the first period but scored a two-point reversal with just two seconds left in the period to get back within a point. Smith took his first lead with a four-point near fall in the second and scored an escape and takedown in the third to win the match by a 10-5 decision.

Hofstra got on the board with a win at 157-pounds but Val Park (165-pounds) answered with a win to put Navy back ahead by 15. Park was locked even 2-2 with Matt Rogers midway through the second period but scored a takedown with 51 seconds on the clock to gain a 4-2 advantage. Park got another takedown in the third and was also awarded a point for stalling by Rogers and for winning riding time to win the match by an 8-2 decision.

Despite Navy's big cushion, Hofstra was able to stay in the match with victories at 174, 184 and 197-pounds to get within six with one bout remaining. Grady Griess (285-pounds) answered the call for Navy, defeating Zachary Knighton-Ward by a 6-0 decision to clinch Navy's second win of the season. Navy's heavyweight improves to 24-4 this season and 5-1 in duals.

DelViscio claimed his second career dual win and 10th overall victory in his career while Ferretti continues to impress with his 16th overall victory and fourth dual win during his freshman campaign. Koderhandt snapped his two-match losing skid and won the 45th of his career, while Park won his 51st career match and got back to .500 in duals this season at 3-3.

The Mids will be right back in action tomorrow for their senior day match versus Binghamton at 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall. Navy will honor its senior class with a ceremony prior to the start of the dual. The matchup will be streamed on ESPN+.
