Wrestling Begins New Ivy Win Streak, Downs Harvard and Brown

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell wrestling team wasted no time putting away Harvard and Brown on Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center, winning its first two Ivy League contests of the season with a 35-6 victory over the Crimson and a 47-3 triumph over the Bears. The 12th-ranked Big Red improved to 6-2 (2-0 Ivy) by collecting 11 bonus point victories along with three forfeit wins.

The Big Red avoided its first Ivy League losing streak since 1982 with its win over the Crimson, its 20th straight dating back to 2001. Freshman Greg Diakomihalis, in for third-ranked Vito Arujau at 125, stepped in with a dominant 9-2 win over Beau Bayless, with No. 30 Dom LaJoie earning the first of two major decision triumphs at 133 with a 14-5 win over Dillon Murphy. After Harvard earned a win at 141, top-ranked Yianni Diakomihalis stuck Lukus Stricker in the first period to make the dual score 13-3.

Hunter Richard outlasted Harvard's Trevor Tarsi in an exhausting 157-pound matchup, picking up the takedown in sudden victory to extend the Big Red's lead. After a second period tech fall win for Julian Ramirez at 165, Chris Foca won the feature bout of the dual, taking an 8-2 triumph over No. 29 Joshua Kim. The Crimson picked up a tight win at 184, but Jacob Cardenas closed out the dual with a tech fall shutout win over Nick Marcenelle. Harvard did not put forward a heavyweight, handing the Big Red its final six points.

Against Brown, pins by the Diakomihalis brothers and another to closed the dual by Lewis Fernandes at heavyweight led the way in Cornell's largest margin of victory in a dual since topping Harvard 50-0 on Jan. 26, 2019. It was the Big Red's 24th consecutive win over the Bears, who forfeited at two weights. Each of Cornell's seven contested wins came with bonus points attached, including Yianni Diakomihals' second win by fall of the day. It was also the junior's 60th straight victory, the second-longest streak in school history.
