BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The No. 20 nationally ranked University of Pennsylvania wrestling team had a successful season opener at the Journeymen Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Quakers sent 24 grapplers to Journeymen, including five freshmen, with
Alex Almeyda and
Jude Swisher winning their pools to open their collegiate careers.

Andy Troczynski (149), and A. Almeyda (133) all took first place in their respective pools to highlight Penn's first outing of the 2023-24 season. Almeyda, Dunnigan, Stout, and Troczynski went on to win their brackets in their weight classes.
In the 133 weight class, freshman Almeyda had an impressive series of matches today. In his first bout against Jake Carlucci of Sacred Heart, he grabbed 12 points from takedowns in the first period to force an 18-3 tech fall win. In his third round, he won 5-1 over Drew Currier (Franklin & Marshall) with a takedown in the first period, then a reversal in the second to secure his spot in the finals. In his last bout of the day, Almeyda had a takedown in the first and second periods over Nain Vazquez (Army) to win the 133C weight class 8-1.
The Quakers had a strong outing in the 149 weight class, with Dunnigan (149E) and Troczynski (149C) winning out in their brackets. Troczynski opened the fresh year with a 4-1 bout against LIU's Drew Witham. Witham started the first period with back-to-back caution warnings from Troczynski's pressure. The sophomore took down his opponent in the third period to claim the victory. Troczynski rolled through the third round of the pool with an 11-2 win, closing out the first period with a takedown and then a nearfall. In the finals of the 149C bracket, Troczynski held Nic Botello to zero points after opening the bout with a quick takedown to eventually win 4-0.
Dunnigan opened his second-year campaign with a 6-2 bout over Lucas Kapusta, grabbing the win with five points in the third period from a nearfall and escape. Dunnigan his spot in the finals of his bracket with an 18-1 win over Noah Tapia of Hofstra after recording 11 straight points with back-to-back nearfalls. The sophomore won out with a major decision over Luke Bender (Franklin & Marshall), tallying eight straight points in the third, with seven coming from a takedown and nearfall.
Senior Stout wrapped up the winning brackets in the 285C weight class, winning his first bout of the day 10-2 and earning a takedown over Army's Christ Murphy in each period. Stout quickly closed out the third round, winning 3-0 over Sacred Heart's Andrew Foy, taking down the Pioneer with 16 seconds left on the clock. The New Jersey native won over Power-5 opponent Tarik Sutkovic 4-2 in the final round. Stout ended his day with a takedown 55 seconds into the third to confirm his win.
