No. 22 Nolan upsets No. 10 Salazar, Bearcats win four bouts against Golden Gophers.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Binghamton wrestling (0-3) came very close to an upset win against #11 Minnesota at Maturi Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. The match began at 165 pounds, and Minnesota jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Binghamton responded well, and led 12-6 after five bouts. The Bearcats led 15-12 with two matches remaining, but Minnesota rallied to win the last two bouts and the match. Three of Minnesota's six wins were decided by one point. All three of Binghamton's dual meets this season have been decided by six points or less.

Highlights

  • Nate Lucier pulled off an incredible comeback to win a 9-7 decision against Vance VomBaur at 141 pounds. Lucier trailed 5-2 going into the final period, but the redshirt-freshman secured a headlock and earned a four-point near fall late in the period to win the first dual match of his career. Lucier's victory allowed the Bearcats to regain the lead, 15-12, with two matches remaining.

  • At 184 pounds, No. 22 Jacob Nolan capped off a great weekend with a 5-4 upset win over No. 10 Isaiah Salazar. Nolan scored first with a takedown in the first period, and he ended the first period with a 2-1 lead. In the second period, Salazar escaped to make it 2-2, but Nolan scored another takedown with a perfect lateral drop off of a counter attack to take a 4-1 lead. The officials went to the table to clarify if any near-fall points should've been awarded, but the call on the mat stood, and Nolan had a 4-2 lead. Nolan still led 4-2 with 1:14 left in the second period, but Salazar tied the match at 4-4. Salazar escaped right after Nolan was called for stalling near the end of the second period. In the final seconds of the second period, a crazy scramble situation brought the crowd to its feet, but Nolan was able to fight off Salazar's attempt. Nolan began the third period in bottom position, and escaped with 40 seconds left in the third period to take a 5-4 lead. Nolan utilized all of his defensive skills in the final seconds to fight off another attempt from Salazar before time ran out. Nolan is now 3-0 on the season with two wins over ranked opponents.

  • No. 7 Lou DePrez displayed his dominance over No. 28 Garrett Joles at 197 pounds. In the first period, DePrez recorded an early takedown and found an opening for a cradle to record a fall in 2:15. DePrez is also 3-0 on the season with two wins against ranked opponents.

  • At 285 pounds, Cory Day prevailed with a 3-2 decision win over Keaton Kluever. Day scored the first and only takedown of the match in the first period. Kluever scored both of his points in the second period on stalling calls to tie the score at 2-2. Entering the third period, Day had accumulated 46 seconds of riding time. Day started the third period in top position. Day controlled the entire third period from top position by locking in both legs, while securing a strong half-nelson to immobilize Kluever on the mat. Day won both of his matches this weekend by one point. Day improves to 3-0 in dual meets this season.

"We are a match away from being great," said head coach Kyle Borshoff. "Nolan had two huge wins over ranked opponents, Lou (DePrez) had two wins against ranked opponents, and Cory Day is getting the job done at heavyweight. Our other guys are wrestling hard. Mike Zarif is knocking on the door of success. Nate Lucier had a great win today. I'm glad we came out here, but we could've left with two wins instead of two losses."
