No. 17 Lehigh Tops CMU, Falls To No. 1 Iowa at Collegiate Wrestling Duals

NICEVILLE, Fla. – No. 17 Lehigh went 1-1 on day one of the Collegiate Wrestling Duals, Monday at Northwest Florida State College. The Mountain Hawks' day began with an impressive 25-6 win over Central Michigan, but Lehigh ran into No. 1 Iowa in its second dual of the day, with the Hawkeyes prevailing 28-7.

The Mountain Hawks won eight bouts against Central Michigan, most of which were decided in the final seconds.

Junior Josh Humphreys went 2-0 on the day with two major decisions over nationally-ranked opponents. First-years Connor McGonagle and Manzona Bryant IV and senior Jordan Wood all picked up victories over top 10-ranked foes on the day.

Monday's split puts Lehigh at 4-3 on the dual meet season.

Humphreys' 10-1 major decision over 19th-ranked Johnny Lovett sparked a six-bout run for Lehigh, breaking a 6-6 tie as the Mountain Hawks were able to pull away.

Prior to Humphreys' win, Lehigh posted a 4-3 decision by junior Jaret Lane over Brock Bergelin at 125 and the biggest win over McGonagle's career to date, a 7-5 decision over seventh ranked Dresden Simon at 141. The victory also avenged a loss in the opening round of last year's NCAA Tournament.

McGonagle gave up a reversal to open the second period scoring, but came back with an escape and takedown to lead 3-2 after two periods. In the third, Simon scored a takedown to pull even at 4-4 before McGonagle escaped and then sealed the win with a late takedown.

Following Humphreys' major decision, Lehigh's wins in the final five weights were by one or two points. Sophomore Brian Meyer (165) and Wood (285) both needed sudden victory to prevail by 3-1 scores. Wood scored a takedown with 44 seconds remaining in sudden victory to defeat ninth-ranked Matt Stencel for the second time this season.

At 184, sophomore AJ Burkhart started fast with an early 4-1 lead but was in danger of losing late on riding time when he scored a reversal in the final seconds to edge Ben Cushman 8-7. First-years Jake Logan (174) and JT Davis (197) also won decisions for the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh battled against top-ranked Iowa, but the defending NCAA Champions won eight bouts to capture their 22nd consecutive dual victory.

The two Lehigh victories came in back-to-back bouts. At 149, Bryant bounced back after letting a 6-0 lead get away against Central Michigan, and did so with an overtime win over eighth-ranked Max Murin. Bryant scored the first takedown against Murin but trailed 3-2 after one. Murin escaped to take a 4-3 lead in the third before Bryant scored two on the edge. An escape by Murin sent the match to sudden victory tied at 5-5 before Bryant secured the winning takedown with 1:18 remaining to earn the 7-5 decision.

Humphreys met No. 8 Kaleb Young in a top 10 matchup at 157. Young reversed to open the second period, leaving Humphreys down 2-1 after two. In the third, Humphreys answered with a reversal of his own and used a powerful half nelson for two sets of four point near falls on the way to an 11-2 major decision, which left Lehigh down 12-7 at the midway point.

Lehigh battled against many of Iowa's big guns. Lane kept top-ranked Spencer Lee to an 8-0 major decision at 125, while McGonagle initiated most of the shots in an 8-3 loss to No. 2 Jaydin Eierman at 141. Meyer also faced a No. 1-ranked foe and fell 6-2 to Alex Marinelli at 165.

The dual ended with another top 10 heavyweight matchup. Facing his second top 10 foe of the day, Wood gave up a takedown with just over 20 seconds remaining in the third period, which proved to be the difference in a 3-2 loss to sixth-ranked Anthony Cassioppi.

Lane and Wood both suffered their first losses of the season.

Lehigh was without the services of first year Malyke Hines at 133. First year Sheldon Seymour battled in a 3-2 defeat against Central Michigan, while junior Satoshi Abe made his first career dual appearance against No. 3 Austin DeSanto of Iowa.

Seymour posted a win in an extra match against Penn State's Baylor Shrunk. First year Drew Munch also won an extra bout, picking up a first period technical fall against Arizona State's Ethan Pickren. Lehigh wrestlers competed in eight extra bouts on Monday.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap up the Collegiate Wrestling Duals on Tuesday when they face No. 10 Missouri at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT. Streaming video will once again be available on Rokfin.
