Bearcats stumble early, before winning the last three matches.

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton wrestling dropped their season opener to Northern Colorado at the Events Center Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats started slow losing six of the first seven bouts, before winning the final three. The Bearcats controlled the matches in the upper weight classes, highlighted by a 7-0 decision win for No. 23 Jacob Nolan at 184 pounds, a 14-2 major decision win for No. 7 Lou DePrez at 197 pounds, and a fall in 3:47 for Cory Day at 285 pounds.

Highlights

  • Michael Zarif prevailed in overtime with a thrilling 11-9 decision win at 149 pounds. Zarif defeated Chris Sandoval, a former NCAA qualifier, with an ankle pick to give the Bearcats their first win of the afternoon.

  • At 184 pounds, No. 23 Jacob Nolan earned a 7-0 decision win over Damen Pape. Nolan sealed the deal late in the third period after securing a takedown that resulted in four back points with a near-side cradle right before the final buzzer.

  • No. 7 Lou DePrez took control early against Xavier Vasquez, dazzling the crowd with multiple takedowns en route to a 14-2 major decision at 197 pounds.

  • Cory Day secured a fall in 3:47 in his first career match at 285 pounds. Day was the starter at 184 pounds last season for the Bearcats.

"We talk about it all the time, bonus points win duals, and we lost a couple matches I thought we'd be able to win," said head coach Kyle Borshoff. "We got beat in a lot of operational situations. We had stalling calls and hands to the face calls against us, and our guys have to be better. We lost three very close matches, and if we're going to win matches next weekend we have to clean up a lot of areas we struggled in this afternoon."
