Wrestling defeats LIU in EIWA opener, 41-6

Bearcats take eight of ten bouts. Nolan, DePrez, and Day win by fall.

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton wrestling (2-5) dominated LIU (1-2) in the EIWA opener on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats won the last seven matches of the dual and scored bonus points in seven of the eight bouts, including the last seven. Nate Lucier picked up a 5-2 decision win to begin the dual. After two LIU victories, which gave the Sharks a brief 6-3 lead, Dimitri Gamkrelidze and Sam DePrez regained the momentum for Binghamton with major decision victories. Jacob Nolan, Lou DePrez and Cory Day all won by fall to secure the dual for the Bearcats.

  • Nate Lucier earned his fourth win of the season with a 5-2 decision over Devin Matthews.
     
  • Dimitri Gamkrelidze scored 12 points in the first period to earn his second consecutive major decision victory.
     
  • Sam DePrez improved to 6-2 on the season with a convincing 14-0 major decision against TJ Franden.
     
  • No 25 Jacob Nolan executed a slick reversal in the second period to pin Gavin Claro in 4:03.
     
  • No. 18 Lou DePrez picked up his third pin of the season in 2:33 against John Dusza.
     
  • At heavyweight, No. 33 Cory Day won his six dual match of the season with a first period pin over Aeden Begue.
"It's great to score back points. It's something we are capable of doing against anybody that we wrestle," said head coach Kyle Borshoff. "We have a lot a time now to get healthy and build towards the Southern Scuffle. We are wrestling a ton of nationally ranked programs in the second semester. We need to win key individual matches and put ourselves in the best position for the postseason."

Binghamton will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Southern Scuffle from Jan. 1-2. Binghamton's next home match will be against Lehigh on January 15.
