No. 20 Wrestling Caps New England Trip With 39-4 Win At Brown

January 28, 2022 | Wrestling

No. 20 Princeton capped its quick trip to New England with a 39-4 win over Brown. Coupled with the Tigers' 34-9 win at Harvard earlier in the day, the Tigers improved to 4-2 overall in dual meets and 3-0 inside the Ivy League.

The 39 points scored are the most by a Princeton Wrestling team since a matching 39-4 win over Sacred Heart on 2/7/16 and the most in an Ivy dual meet by the Tigers since a 43-2 win over Harvard in the 1986-87 season.

Bonus points were there for the taking, and the Tigers did just that with six of Princeton's wins coming with extra points toward the team score.

"This was a business trip and we did what we needed to do in order to take care of business," said head coach Chris Ayres. "Two duals in two different states on the same day is a grind, but we embrace that. We found ways to get bonus points, and never stopped looking for opportunities to score. We're excited to add a pair of Ivy League wins today and look forward to the stretch run over the next couple of weeks as we head towards March."

No. 1 Patrick Glory started things off with a dominant 17-1 technical fall, needing just 3:32 to finish the match and jumpstart the Tigers to a 5-0 lead.

Glory's win was one of five in a row for Princeton as the Tigers opened up a 21-0 lead.

Nick Kayal defeated Reese Fry, 6-1, at 133 pounds. After a scoreless first, Kayal dialed up a reversal and takedown in the second to pull away. Danny Coles followed with a 13-7 decision at 141, racking up five takedowns – including two in the third period to blow open a 7-5 match.

At 149, Marshall Keller conceded the first two points but that was all he gave up as he roared back on Umihiko Saito to the tune of a 16-2 major decision. He secured two separate four-point nearfalls in the bout, including one in the second period after a reversal.

No. 8 Quincy Monday worked the only fall of the dual at 157, digging in a headlock and underhook late in the first period to toss Sam McMonagle and get the pin at 2:22.

Following Brown's only win of the dual at 165, the Tigers won the final four bouts to seal the win.

The Tigers picked up a forfeit from Brown at 174, and No. 22 Travis Stefanik followed with a 16-9 decision at 184. He was workmanlike in the win, scoring six takedowns and a reversal.

No. 17 Luke Stout also had six takedown in his win at 197 pounds, adding a reversal and six backpoints en route to a 20-5 tech fall at 5:58.

Matthew Cover closed the dual with a 14-5 major decision highlighted by a takedown in the final 10 seconds to lock up the bonus point.
