WASHINGTON - Four wins were earned by American University wrestling, but four other close bouts all went the way of the Spartans as Michigan State beat the Eagles 20-12 in the first dual meet of the season. It was the closest result in three tries for AU against MSU, and only two years removed from a 33-0 shutout.

Notable

• Redshirt freshman Coen Bainey started the Eagles off with a high-scoring and exciting win over Caleb Weiand at 125 pounds, 18-17. Bainey posted three takedowns and four near fall points, losing a big lead late but earning the riding time point to secure the victory.
• The teams traded wins up through 165 pounds and were tied 9-9 at the conclusion of that one.
• Senior Jack Maida went 1-0 for the season with a 6-4 victory over Jaden Crumpler at 141 pounds, up two weight classes from a year ago. Maida scored an early takedown and remained in the lead the rest of the way, getting riding time as well.
• Sophomore Kaden Milheim earned the win at 165, 7-3 over the Spartans' DJ Shannon. After a scoreless first period, Milheim got a second-period takedown for a 3-1 lead and another in the third to keep his advantage.
• To close out the meet, grad student Will Jarrell, ranked 26th by Intermat in the preseason, beat Max Vanadia 6-4 thanks to a takedown in the second period and three escape points.
• The Eagles lost by just two points at 133, 157, and 184, and by just a single point at 149 when Gage Owen was edged 10-9 by Clayton Jones.
