Navy Wrestling Places Third At 44th Annual Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy wrestling team held the 44th annual Navy Classic on Saturday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House and had another successful showing, placing third amongst 12 teams. The Mids' third-place finish marks the 37th time they've placed in the top three in their annual tournament. Although Navy didn't crown an individual champion, nine of its 19 wrestlers placed which was tied for the second most by one team.

Jacob Koser and Jacob Lucas both advanced to the semifinals in the 197-pound weight class. Koser finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, only falling to InterMat 23rd-ranked Silas Allred of Nebraska in the championship bout to place second. Lucas won his first two matches before falling to Allred in the semifinals. Lucas fell just short of a third-place finish against VMI's Tyler Mousaw but still took fourth place for the second straight tournament.

Both of Navy's heavyweight wrestlers also placed. Grady Griess used a major and two decision victories to advance to the finals. Griess fell in the championship bout to #8 Wyatt Hendrickson by a 4-1 decision to place second. Griess' loss to Hendrickson is his first of the season and snapped a 14-match win streak that dates back to last season. Jamier Ferere fell in his first match and was trailing 8-4 in his second, but ended the match with a fall at 5:39 to advance. Ferere would go on to defeat Jonathan Chesser of The Citadel in sudden victory by an 8-6 decision to end the day 3-2 to place seventh.

Josh Koderhandt (141-pounds) took third-place with a 3-1 record, which included a fall victory over Air Force's Garrett Kuchan (6:57). Val Park (165-pounds) ended the day with a team-leading five victories to place fifth, while Tyler Hunt (133-pounds) also took fifth place with a 4-1 record. Additionally, Sammy Starr placed fifth/sixth and Hunter Johns placed eighth.

Nebraska took the team title with 171.5 points and led the tournament with five champions. The victory is Nebraska's second Navy Classic Title and its first since 1997.

Navy will step away from the mat next week for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The two-day tournament takes place on Dec. 2 and 3 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
